Check it out-Rice vs the non-HYP Ivies

Rice engineering is as good as any at the undergraduate level, particularly EECS and bioengineering. Rice is part of the Texas Medical Center and has many joint research programs with Baylor College of Medicine, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, etc. The Ken Kennedy school of computer science is first rate. The College of Architecture is consistently in the top five, and the Sheperd Conservatory of Music is a peer of Julliard, Eastman, Curtis and CIM. Rice leads the world in developing practical applications in nanotechnology. For what rankings are worth, Princeton Review also ranks Rice first for quality of life.

location/major is what's keeping is away from me :(

Rice is pretty sick school. My cousin went there. Hawkette, are you a dancer? For your high school?

^^^^ ???? Don't understand your post, Samsonclark. My s is graduating tthis yr with a degree in MechE. He has already had 4 job offers with incredible salaries. Wonderful school, wonderful opportunities. And Houston is like any big metro city -- lots of cultural opportunities, etc.-- the "Texas" issue is just silly.

Did you think "sick" meant bad? I thought 'sick' was like, 'wicked,' or 'radical,' or 'cool.' When did I even talk about a "texas" issue, jym626? I've been to Rice and Houston before.

Take a chill pill, sampson. I said I did not understand your post. As for the issues with Houston, I was responding to other posts in this thread, such as the one right above yours. It is not all about you. Sorry if you misunderstood.

Rice is definitely a good school, especially if you are considering staying in Texas or the southwest. Like Vandy, Emory and a handful of others, it has a very solid reputation in some key geographic areas. However, it is eclipsed by the prestige of the the other ivies practically everywhere else.

i live about 10 minutes from rice, and i have to say that houston is nothing like the stereotype of texas. rice has incredible engineering and architecture programs, although all of the people i know that take classes there rave about the quality. the only downside is the weather. if you go to rice, be prepared for 100 degrees in the summer and 85 in the winter, with year-round humidity.

But the beauty of the weather is that it's easy enough to not be in Houston during the summer, so you miss all but a few weeks of the 100 degrees weather and still get the nice 70 degree weather in January. Though right now it's about 50, which seems cold until I talk to my friends in the northeast.

i love texas. i think it just has sorta a negative reputation. but if you come here to one of the cities you'll realize texas is actually a pretty neat state. i'm applying to rice. and i'm glad. i didn't realize how gerat it was for a long time, but it is a really excellent school and it's really well-endowed which is why it can give away so much scholarship money. and it has EXCELLENT teachers. and small classes.
