I'm trying to check my application status on Tulane's website, but when I enter the username and password that I was assigned, it says one of them is incorrect. So, I hit the "forgot username or password" button for them to be resent to be, and when I enter my email, it says the email account I provided was not found in their records. I submitted Part 1 of my app awhile ago, and I've been receiving emails from Tulane on that address, so I'm not sure why that's coming up? Has this happened to anyone else? What should I do in this situation?

When I submitted Part 1 of my app, I applied under SCEA. I was fairly confident about this decision, but it was really early on in the process so I may have jumped the gun. There's another school (one of my top choices, if not my number one) that I was set on RDing at, but I now realize that applying early to this other school would help my chances of admission a lot. Tulane is still one of my top choices, so I'd at least like to apply EA. Is it possible to switch my app from SCEA to EA? If not, it's not the end of the world, I can deal with it. But if it is possible, how would I go about doing it? Would that look very unfavorably upon me as an applicant?

Just my intuition, but I cannot see how it doesn’t look like you are backtracking on Tulane by switching. Not saying you shouldn’t do it, you have to weigh the relative importance of these options. And it certainly won’t kill you if you have a good “Why Tulane” essay.

You can certainly call admissions and tell them you want to switch. I suppose if I were you I would talk directly to the admissions counselor that is responsible for your area of the country, and just be honest. Tell them there are two schools you are trying to decide between that are clearly above any others you will apply to, and because of the policies of this other school you need to apply RD to improve your chances. That you would like to have the choice come down to Tulane and this other school, so you need to switch the status to EA in order to maximize the chances of this happening.

Admissions people are not so myopic that they think students won’t have close calls in which school to pick. Sometimes there is one school that is a clear favorite, but most students have 2 or 3 they would be equally happy with. While of course Tulane would like to have you only thinking of them, they would certainly be happy if the majority of students had it down to Tulane and one other school.

Thank you for that advice. It’s not that I like Tulane any less than I did when I was filling out the first part of my app, I just didn’t take the other school’s policies into full consideration. This was poor planning on my part, and now I’ll have to deal with it. Honestly, it would be amazing to EA at Tulane and find out in October or November (as EA at Tulane lets you know on a somewhat rolling basis depending on when you submit your app) so that I could have that option in case I don’t get in to the other school on December 15. And if I don’t get into Tulane, I could start looking more seriously into my other options. Either way, these two schools are my top 2 choices, so I just want to make sure I do what I can to maximize my chances at both. I just hope I won’t be jeopardizing my chances at Tulane by switching to EA, but I’ll write the best “Why Tulane” essay I can and I’ll start planning my visit!

Your welcome, and that sounds like a plan. BTW, when I said “…and because of the policies of this other school you need to apply RD to improve your chances.” I obviously meant ED. I am sure you figured that out. Good luck!
