For SoCal folks with kids going way north, if they will have a car there, people up there are supposed to have emergency kits in their cars in case they get stuck in a blizzard. I have friends who are transplants from Minnesota, and they talk about the differences between earthquake kits and car blizzard emergency kits. I suppose that could apply to anywhere you could get stuck on a road during a snowstorm.

D won’t need quarters or bed risers. They use their student ID with money loaded onto it for laundry. And the beds are adjustable, no risers needed.

I will try to remind her to bring tool set, sewing kit, first aid kit with OTC medicines.

We were in BB&B today. My D really doesn’t like memory foam but the eggshell mattress toppers are so thin. So she said, hey, why don’t I just get a queen topper and fold it in half?
I think it will work, right?

We cut one in half to use two!

King, though.

Thanks @OHMomof2 you are right, it should be a king to be wide enough.
(The topper widths we were looking at is 34" TXL, 54" Queen, 72" King)

My 18 year old D just filled out a health care proxy for the state in which she will be attending school. She will be a long way from home, so in case of an emergency, (God forbid), my DH and I can be contacted.

Instead of egg shell, memory foam or queen topper, look at BBB for a fiber (1 1/2 inches thick) or a feather topper (1 inch thick).

My daughter will be attending Penn State and we live in NJ. I found the PA health proxy online. Does it require an attorney’s signature or can we just fill it out, have a notary stamp it, and then have her give it to the university health center?

@swmcollege you just need to get it notarized. No attorney needed.

Currently the larger banks like Wells, BOFA, Chase etc. are the most commonly used by college students. I have been assisting students get set up with student accts for years. All of these large institutions say free accts and advertise on campus atms but there is almost always a min. balance or direct dep. needed to waive the monthly service fee. Most students on weekends and or breaks often times travel. Maybe stay in California or to another state. They will incure min $3 fee from the atm and another from the bank itself. Will they somtimes get reimbursed maybe but how annoying to have to call or find a location with a manager willing to waive.

I now have been using East West Bank as my bank for college students. Checking account is really free. no mim or direct deposit needed. unlimited atm card usage nationwide. no fee for incoming wires. free online, billpay and mobile banking and a starter credit card with no annual fee and rewards pts.

Across the board the first bank i have come across with no hidden fees and or negatives.

Capital One has a checking account for anyone but college students especially, with no minimum balance and no ATM fees, lots of ATMs. I will have D open one when she turns 18 next month, there are 3 ATMs even in her small college town.

Yes, I am looking at Capitol One as well for credit card

I like my C1 card because I get travel points to use on any kind of travel, not just a certain airline. But the checking account is kind of a no-brainer. You get $50 from them within 2 months if you use your debit card 3x, just for setting it up. And the free ATM network is impressive (and international).

@Swmcollege can I ask where you found the PA health proxy form? We need one too. Thanks.

forms by state http://www.caringinfo.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3289

I plan to give him a copy, keep a copy and we have dear friends who live near his school, they will have a copy and also be entered into his phone under his ICE contacts.

@dennehy thanks!

Hi everyone, new poster here :D. In which state should the Power of Attorney be notarized? The state where the school (MA) is, or home state?

I forget if I ever shared this checklist D has at UVM http://www.uvm.edu/~slife/orientation/pdfs/Checklist_2015.pdf
