I agree. The health insurance thing is a total hassle. They require a ton of documentation even if your child is still covered by your plan.
Excellent advice @henry1984. I would have never thought of that.
Earplugs for those nights when there is noise/roommate snoring
@Merle123 , we got dd noice cancelling headphones for the same reason. And snoring in college is any time of day if a roommate likes to nap!
Totally agree with the earplugs and noise cancelling headphones. They were a saving grace for me when my two roommates snored constantly last year.
Earplugs are ok but I bought my D one of those fans with a bunch of “noise cancelling” sounds (rain, waves, etc.) and she loves it. Uses it every night and doesn’t complain about any residual hallway noise anymore…
How about laptop security … do kids lock-down their electronics while left in their dorm room?
spoke to S about noise cancelling headphones after a conversation about a snoring roomie on camp. He says he’d be worried that he’d sleep through his alarm!!
Any thoughts on that?
If he has an Apple Watch (or I’m sure other fitness trackers) he can set a vibrating alarm
@kcheves Apple watch! In his dreams!
Hi There - I use Sleepphones (headphones that are very comfy for sleeping). I plug these into my iPhone and use an ambient noise cancelling app. You can set a timer on the app so it shuts off at a set time and your S won’t miss hearing his alarm. I plan on sending these with my D this year.
The Container Store has a coupon you can get online for 20% off starting in July - click on the “College” section and a box will pop up where you can sign up to receive it.
I wondered how they print things? Does every student bring a printer??
I bought an all-in-one that my older child took to Cornell. They found little need for it (printed in an office where he worked) and passed it off to the younger one for use at Rutgers. Rutgers gives a printing allowance for each term (there are printers in many locations). It’s a huge allowance. Hard to imagine using all of it. Still, it was convenient to have it there for last minute printing. You could ask in a forum specific to your child’s school. My guess is the need is very limited.
@momofcskid - My daughter hasn’t printed anything - everything is electronically submitted. Plus if students do bring their own printers they need to be hardwired because there is too much interference with the wifi signals.
My girl who attends Amherst College mentioned several locations on campus where students are able to print for free and that they can also print at the library for a fee.
I also recall that at Move in Day one of the AO’s mentioned that their office offered free printing and free coffee and even though students might think they didn’t need them anymore, that they still wanted to see their faces.
My D’s college has printers in the dorms and other locations and each student gets a certain amount of free printing per year or semester.
Both of my DDs brought printers to college. So far they only printed to their own printers as it is easier. Their roommates also DDs’ printers as it is convenient. Both printers are all-in-one, they can scan and copy which came in handy. The printers and ink are cheap, I forgot how much they were but I think they both were under $50 each.
My S and roommate have one printer in their room, I don’t know how much they use it. They have to use a printer cable though, not allowed to use wifi capability.
Thank you everyone!
