I’ll be freshman this year at Brown. I haven’t taken chem since 10th grade, and then it was just honors chem. Should I take Chem 330 or 100? I’ve heard that 100 is a waste of time and money, and that 330 is a review of AP chem and mind numbingly easy if you absorb even 1/10 of the AP chem material. BUT I’ve also heard that if you haven’t taken AP chem, you really need to take 100, because the pace in 330 is just too quick to handle. Like I said before, I haven’t had AP chem, but I’ve been trying to study using the Zumdahl book over the summer, and with the online course. So, 330 or 100?

(This choice of course is contingent upon me passing the placement exam. So, in essence, does passing the placement test mean that I am okay to tackle 330? Or if I barely pass, then I should take 110?)

I am premed, so science GPA is extremely important. Any advice would be great!

I was in your situation this time last year, and I made the wrong decision. Don’t make my mistake. I assumed that not having taken AP Chem and barely passing the placement test meant I should take Chem 100. It didn’t. It meant I was perfectly prepared for Chem 330.

Chem 100 is basically a remedial class that some people assume will be an “easy A.” It’s actually mandatory Pass/Fail, and I had a harder time in Chem 100 than I did later in Chem 330 due to the terrible teaching.

As Lapras said, take Chem 330 unless you fail the placement test.

in terms of medical school though, know that passing the placement exam is not the same as “earning credit for CHEM 100” such that I think you would still need one more semester of non-organic chem.

Sorry, just to clarify, but if I pass the placement exam now, can I elect to take Chem 33 in the spring?

I believe so. You may need to retake the placement test in the spring, but if you can pass it now, you can pass it then.

As long as you still remember what a molecule is, just take Chem 330!!
