has anyone taken the course in recent years? the website states that CHEM 110 Gen Chem 1 is not a prerequisite, but do you guys think that there's a need for foundational chem knowledge in Gen Chem 2?

I took CHEM 110 and 120 four years ago, however a friend of mine (who’s my age) finally got around to finishing them up over the past two years.

As far as I can tell, not much has changed between when I took it and when he took it, and from what I recall: CHEM 110 was a revolving door of professors who introduce you to some fairly disjoint aspects of chemistry. CHEM 120, on the other hand, was also a dynamic cast, however the emphasis was on thermodynamics, a little organic chemistry (in the end), dynamic equilibria (le chatelier principle), and maybe some other stuff I’m forgetting.

In CHEM 110, you learn about all of the following: atomic fission (i.e. the a-bomb), the anatomy of the atom (they’ll throw in alpha, beta and gamma particles), the photo-electric effect, coordinate chemistry, and some random metallurgy.

It’s kind of clear, if by name alone, that these two syllabi have little to do with each other.

Personally, I’d take both for the hell of it (the lab portions of both are annoying, but a good chance to meet people). However, you can get away with CHEM 120, without 110.
