Hey, I wanted to know how doable it would be to take these two courses for my first quarter of freshmen year. Also, who is the best professor for these two courses so that i can get a high grade.

That's very doable... If people can take Math 31A alongside Chem 20A first quarter, you can surely take Math 3A alongside Chem 14A first quarter.

hey flopsy, do most freshmen take math31a, did u?

I think a significant number of first years take 31B or 32A.

Yes, I took Math 31A. However, only a few students take Math 31A at UCLA due to the majority of freshmen testing out of it with AP Calculus AB/BC credit. If you look into the Fall Quarter enrollment numbers for Math 31A/31B/32A, you can see that ~30% of entering freshmen take Math 31A, while ~40% of entering freshmen take Math 31B and ~30% of entering freshmen take Math 32A. Most of the engineers I knew had achieved AP Calculus BC credit and went into Math 32A directly. It seems like the people who do take Math 31A are the people who want an easy A+ to boost their GPAs from the beginning.

my roomie took 31b, and 20a first quarter, 20b and bl with 32a second quarter.. and is still maintiaining a 3.9ish gpa. amazing huh aHAha.

Are 3A/3B/3C considered as calculus? Will medical schools count them as calculus?

Oh, another question, would 3ABC be a joke for someone who got a 5 on the Calc BC test?

so the classes you take doesnt matter right, as long as you can get a good gpa? would it be smart to take math31a and 31b even if i got like a 4or5 on the ap calc? or take the 3series? so if i decide to take like math31a or 31b, would i still need to take the placement exam to get into the class even if i passed the ap calc exam?

You can't retake classes you already have credit for.

It does matter which classes you take (based on major). A physical science or engineering major will require the 30s.

No, you don't need to take a placement exam.

Yes, you do need do need to take the placement tets. I spoke to the guy on the phone who called all the admitted students and told him I took Calculus II and passed the Ap calc test but I still need to take it.

Well, we didn't have to last year.

ucapplicant05, u said, "You can't retake classes you already have credit for." do you mean if we took ap calc and passed it, we CANT take math31a or 31b or what do you mean by that?

Yeah, that's what I meant. If the chart says that your score counts for 31A and 31B, then you cannot repeat those.

I took math 32a, chem 20a, and the ird cluster my first quarter. 3A and 14A are very doable.

And 3A/B/C is considered calculus.

jyancy, if you could retake those classes, would you take the easier route?

Well, my hands were tied when I was signing up for my classes as a biochem major, so there really wasn't an alternative.

ucapp, are u sure you can't take math31a or 31b if you passed the ap calc exam? ive read that people who have taken ap calc and have passed the exam retake math31a and 31b in order to get a better grade.

jyancy:
If you pass the AP calculus exam, you have no option of whether you can start from the beginning (3A or 31A) or not. If you pass w/ a 5, your options are if you want to start at 32a or 3c, regardless of whether you think you're prepared or not, or if you think you need review or not.

flopsy:
Nope. You have to petition Murphy Hall to be allowed to take a course that you passed out of with an AP score of 4/5. UCLA is very adamant about students graduating in four years, to the extent that they force you to use your AP credits. Otherwise, everyone would take Math 31A/31B and get an easy A. The lesson is, don't take the Calculus AB/BC/etc. AP test if you definitely plan on taking Math 31A/31B/etc. to boost your GPA.

(from the Placement Exams thread)

"Pre-med students should note that many medical schools do not recognize AP Calculus test scores as college unit credit"

....ok so UCLA would force its premeds to use their AP credit even if it would hurt them for medical school?

Well, you just need to find some other way of fulfilling the math requirement
