The last time I took a chemistry class was in 10th Grade and it was only an honors class.
Do you think taking 14A will be difficult if I did not take AP Chem in high school?
Thanks in advance

You should be fine.
You can’t go back to take the AP Chem, so just take it. Some students did not even take honor Chem.

I took this class a few years ago with almost no chemistry background (regular chemistry, didn’t remember anything). Many of your peers will have taken AP Chem, but if you put in some extra work and maybe familiarize yourself a little with the material (i.e. this summer) before taking the class it should be okay. Don’t be afraid to consult other resources outside the textbook (VOH, online tutorials/websites, form a study group)

thanks you two

If you really really want to do well, it’ll be pretty tough. Most other students will have taken AP Chem, but don’t sell yourself short just because you didn’t. It does mean you’ll have to put in extra work but it will definitely pay off; I highly suggest prioritizing practice problems. “knowing the concepts” simply isn’t enough since basically everyone understands the concepts–the students who get A’s are the ones who either have great chem intuition or have done enough practice problems to deal with different problem types, scenarios, etc.

I would recommend checking out an AP prep book from the library (I think there’s AP prep books for whatever reason at the ASUCLA store) to use as a supplement if you want some extra help clearing up concepts, and definitely take advantage of discussion sections and TA and prof office hours. Getting A’s in science courses at UCLA is >not< easy, but it is rewarding! You have the pleasure and pain of being amongst a motivated and intelligent student body–studying here will push you to your limits but you will be a much smarter student because of this. Good luck!

Not that hard, but depends on who’s earning the grades and what courses. I earned 14 As and 2 A-s in Chemistry courses, and two B/B+ grades. I think Physics is hard to get As in, but there are probably others who have earned many As in Physics courses.

Just don’t worry and have fun learning.
