i had chem14a with scerri winter quarter 09. i'm enrolled for chem14b for spring quarter 09 with scerri again, but i also have the option to wait until summer to take 14b with ruiz-silva. scerri is an okay professor but the ratings on ruiz-silva seem pretty good... so i was wondering, what do you guys suggest? anyone ever have ruiz-silva? what would you guys recommend? should i just wait and take it summer?

i would highly recommend taking 14b during spring. then if you really want to be productive during the summer, take 14c during the summer.

im saying this because you’ll end up with like 4 lower div science classes your sophomore year and you’ll hate yourself…OR, you’ll end up having to take lower divs during your junior year and you’ll hate yourself even more

I think you should just take scerri. i had him. hes okay. not great but okay and teaches all the necessary stuff. plus, your “technically” already behind cuz most ppl start the series fall quarter.

i know i’m behind but i’m going to take 14c in the fall anyway. taking 14b spring or summer doesn’t make any difference in my lower div requirement since i’m not going to have 14c until the fall of 09 either way. the ONLY difference here is the professor. i had scerri this quarter and even though he is easier than most, he is a lot more conceptual, which i am NOT GOOD AT AT ALL. i am more of a straight forward, solve the given problem kind of person. which is why i got a C+ in scerri’s class…

in this case would scerri still be the better choice over this ruiz-silva person?

No it does make a difference. If your taking Chem 14B spring quarter, it allows you to take a DIFFERENT class over the summer. Use the summer wisely since many courses are easier over the summer, not just your chem 14B. I would think about taking LS courses over the summer, like 2 or 3 depending on where you are. Those are the hardest courses in the LS series due to the amount of material you are expected to know.

i had scerri this quarter and even though he is easier than most, he is a lot more conceptual, which i am NOT GOOD AT AT ALL. i am more of a straight forward, solve the given problem kind of person. which is why i got a C+ in scerri’s class…

Soo many people are like this. What this really means is that you are a plug and chug kind of person of in other words, you dont really understand the material. If you are just a plug and chug person how the hell are you going to get past hardinger and ochem in general? There are no numbers to plug in. You will be given, for example, reactants and products and told to show the process. You have to understand different types of reactions to solve those types of questions and use your reasoning of those rxns to solve the problem, not just plug and chug.

For your future as, im assuming, a premed I URGE you to start actually learning and COMPREHENDING the material inside and out. This means being able to visualize solutions and concepts before even plugging in any numbers. Your C+ in that class indicates to me that you have not really met the demands that college requires in terms of comprehension and breadth. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but if you fix that you will be far better off in the future.

^a lot of truth to this post. But the main reason for wanting to get out of being a “plug and chug” type of person is because the MCAT is ALL conceptual (physics, chem, bio, everything). Very few questions require plugging numbers into an equation and solving.

i understand, thanks for the info. i’m going to keep trying hard though, and i’ll change some study habits and work on comprehension.

i wanted to take physics 6a summer but it interferes with chem14bl (lab). and LS doesn’t work out with my times either… if i take 14b spring, i just have to take chem14bl and a GE over summer because if that’s my only option. might as well just take chem14b over summer with 14bl.

also, i was considering taking psych10 spring quarter (it’s a requirement for pyschobio which i might do) but it interferes with chem14b… so it seemed like a good idea to just take 14b over summer with 14bl…

i had scerri for 14a too, winter quarter. he’s not bad as long as you know the course reader well. you don’t even have to know THAT much conceptual stuff… just know the stuff in the course reader.

One midterm. Think well ONLINE quizes that you can take up to THREE Times. Easy homework, and a final.

Honestly all you need to do is memorize the course reader and you’ll get an A. I took 14a with scerri last quarter, went to class 2 times, went to discussion about 6-7, and just memorized the course reader. The past tests he gives us are exactly like the real tests and there is no reason for you not to do well if you just study those two things.
