Chem 153a with Villa

she's hot for a chem professor

She's cute from far away, upon closer inspection you are doomed to be disapointed..

weird how there's no bruinwalk reviews for her... she's already been teaching for two quarters

chem 153a is very competitive, but the class and material is not hard (and pretty weak in comparison to engineering courses).

The overriding concept of chem 153a is regulation, you go over the basics in the first six weeks (carbs and amino acids), then you start getting into how and why different enzymes use these (carbs, aminos ect) to boost a pathway in a certain direction. And you start to see why all that memorization at the beginning is now useful.

Its quite a fascinating concept really, and you end up learning a lot about how the body is regulated on the chemical level.

the first lecture was today... she seemed scary lol

also, do any of you remember how hard her quizzes were? at least the first couple?

i took it last quarter, which was her first quarter writing the quizzes herself. They were doable, straightforward, from the lectures/problem sets. The only problem is that there is sooo much material, especially later on when things start picking up, and the quizzes are only like 5 questions. Personally I thought having such short quizzes was really unfair since anything from lecture is "fair game" (ughh hate that phrase after taking this class). So you have to really be on top of things. Don't forget about the problem sets!! I did haha

P.S. on the final there were quite a few questions straight off/slightly modified from the fall final. So go over the old finals

yea, my TA said that she makes us memorize a LOT, more than the previous professor

lol that really sucks.... did ur TA tell you how to study for the quiz? Im pretty clueless since im not sure if its like an LS midterm or something where you need to memorize all the facts in every slide

i imagine it might be a combination of fact recall and problem-solving. won't really know until Friday though

it is NOTHING like a LS midterm/final. but yes, you will need to memorize all the facts on the slides. The bad thing is, this will not get you an A (or a B even). You have to be able to apply the material (especially for the midterm).

the final is a different story. just memorization.

is it true that most of her midterm is multiple choice?

doesnt she have old tests on VOH that you can look at?

i'd tell you, but i dont remember.

my friend also told me she really changed the structure of the course, so not sure how that may affect her exam style/content. it used to be weekly quizzes in discussion, 1 MT and final when i took it. then she changed it to weekly quizzes in lecture, 1 MT and final. then this quarter she changed it to 2 quizzes, 2 MT's and final.

most of her exams are NOT multiple choice. the majority of the points come from free response. the final for fall07 had very little (if any) multiple choice.
