Chem 1A Custom Pack?

I was wondering what we'll need for Stacy's chem 1A class this fall...the cal bookstore sells it in a custom pack and I wanted to buy them separately because I don't feel like paying 130+.

Thanks!

What the pack gives you: a Berkeley edition of “Chemistry: Science of Change”, a $10 rebate for purchasing an iClicker new from the bookstore, and an OWL access card.

For the class you need at least an OWL (Online Web-Based Learning) access card and an iClicker. The card gives you access to the website for homework assignments and I believe you can purchase it separately at the Cal student store. Because the OWL access card comes with an e-book version of the textbook you don’t need to buy a physical book unless you want to. If you buy a used iClicker you still register the number under your name at the iClicker website. It’s used for taking quick quizzes every day to prove your attendance in class.

Thanks!

I e-mailed the professor and she told me I also needed a lab manual and a discussion manual. Are those also in the pack or can they be purchased separately from the bookstore?

So the package only has the book, online access, and iclicker? Not lab manual?

Also do you guys think I need the iclicker by the first day of class?

i think you buy the iclicker seperately

the packages for chem are generally cheaper than buying them separately

The pack does not come with the lab manual and discussion manual, nor does it come with an iClicker (it comes with a rebate), but you’ll have some time to get those after class starts, so you won’t need them immediately.

How much exactly is the OWL card if you buy that separately?

Looks like this is a way to buy the access card also available with an ebook version in place of the physical book

overall, you go to http://owl.cengage.com

Just note that the access code that comes from the pack is for “Chemistry: Science of Change UC Berkeley Edition”.

the textbook has changed from last year - please do not use the owl access listed in my reply #8. Further, while the Owl site has the 4th edition of Oxtoby’s Chemistry: Science of Change listed, Cal does not pop up as a choice for that text - not sure why but even more reason to just buy the bundle or buy the card separately if sold at the bookstore.

What is the difference between Berkeley’s edition of “Chemistry: Science of Change” and the one on the OWL site that is also on online sites?

are the suggested materials by the bookstore helpful or not? there’s a “chemistry (ssm)” and “chemistry (sg)” that cost over 60 dollars each. are they worth it?

I didn’t get them yet. But we might have to, just depends on how you feel about the class.

I called the bookstore and they said that the chem1a package comes with a textbook and the owl access. I asked if you could buy it separately and the guy said that he doesn’t think so because both are custom to Berkeley.

I’ve already purchased my books AT Berkeley and basically, the OWL and Oxtoby and rebate for iClicker are bound in a wrapped package. Unwrapping it basically means you’re buying that entire $130+ package

iClickers are purchased at the register (I bought a new one so I could use rebate) and lab manuals are bound with the discussion booklets in another plastic wrapping where the textbook was. Chem solution guides and study guides are sold on the same shelf if you guys want to dish another $50 each for help.

I spent $430 on books for 3 classes. =.= my parents pretty much freaked out and the employees could tell that I was a freshman from my parents’ reactions >_< how embarrassing

@Crystal LOL, that’s so funny.

What is the discussion manual?

So consensus is that cheapest place for this semester’s chem 1a materials is at the Cal Student Store?

CrystalProphecy: LMAO . . . thanks for the laugh. Anyway, you should buy as many books as possible from online; also, some professors say older editions are okay. One of my textbooks was almost $200, but the professor said the older edition was okay, too, so I got it for less than $50 online.

Wow, both stores are backordered on Chem 1A materials. What to do now?
