<p>I just went to check the books required for this course, and the cost was $300. There were two categories - those required and those suggested by the bookstore. Does anyone know if all the stuff suggested by the bookstore is necessary. I would appreciate insight from anyone who has taken this class before. Also do you only need to buy one clicker? Do you need one per class? Where do you find the ISB # for the book? When I click on the class, it lists the books but not that number. Thanks.</p>
<p>You don’t actually need anything for chem1A except for the iclicker (you only need to buy one, ever). </p>
<p>However, I would highly recommend purchasing the textbook and the molecular model kit, especially if you plan to take organic chemistry after chem1A, as both resources are useful for both gchem and ochem. While it is true that many students take the course without ever looking at the textbook, but I think it can be very helpful, judging from my own experience (I took the course, and I’m a chem1A tutor now, as well).</p>
<p>In addition to the clicker for 1A, the lab manual and a lab notebook are also required for 1AL. The notebook is special and makes carbon copies, so you can’t just use a regular notebook. </p>
<p>If you can buy the lab manual and lab notebook separately, you might want to buy a lab notebook that has thinner notebook lines on the bottom half of the page (used to draw TLC plates for ochem) - that way you don’t have to purchase a new lab notebook for ochem.</p>

<p>Well, the amount isn’t all that high, but it is inflated with stuff that almost nobody would use. There is a study guide (SG) that restates things in the textbook and has some additional practice questions. There is then a student solutions manual (SSM) that has answers to more of the questions than are given in the texts or study guides.</p>
<p>Even the people who bought these almost never cracked them open. </p>
<p>There is an online system which is used for study and tests. That is part of the bundle - the textbook plus the one-semester access code. I don’t remember but it may be that the entire textbook is available in the online system for reading, rendering the physical book superfluous. It varies by the textbook - some authors allow the text to be online, some don’t. Physics 8A online system didn’t have the text accessible, but Bio 1A online system did. Once you know that, you can decide to skip buying the physical text entirely. </p>
<p>There are ways to register for the OWL online system through the publisher, without buying the bundle from the bookstore. </p>
<p>Just to be more confusing, their is another online system called bspace run by Cal that many classes use.</p>

<p>The bundle is undoubtedly the OWL card plus the new text.</p>
<p>The calculator was NOT required, just one like it - doubt that they require that exact model now. </p>
<p>Clicker, lab manual and lab notebook needed. The lab stuff are relatively inexpensive, less than the clicker and nothing like the cost of a textbook.</p>
<p>the clicker is how your son will take daily quizzes that give points toward his grade. </p>
<p>The only way to know in detail about what is necessary is to wait until your son has chem 1a class show up on his bspace account. Has he logged on yet?</p>
<p>bspace.berkeley.edu and uses the same ID and password as used for bearfacts, etc. </p>
<p>The fall classes will show up before the first week of class. It varies depending on the particular professor and GSIs handling the class. They are the ones that upload the stuff.</p>
<p>That will be the definitive and complete word on what is required.</p>

<p>the charts are just generic laminated 8.5 x 11 sheets you would find at any college in the US. totally unnecessary.</p>
<p>By the way, regarding Ned’s Text Books, when do the titles become available for the fall semester? When I go on there now, it just has the summer term stuff available…</p>
<p>Most people don’t buy textbooks this far ahead of the semester. Ned’s is always last to get everything updated.</p>

<p>The lab manual is a kind of writing pad that you will use to write up each lab. It has ‘carbon copy’ tear-off copies of each page. If it is used, some number of those have already been used. If you found a used one, you would need to have enough unused pages left to last for the term. I can’t help you with an estimate of how many pages you would need - maybe someone else who just finished 1A has an idea.</p>

<p>there are going to be two different ones and theyre still working on the new lab manual.</p>
<p>the thing is, the dept of chem are having “green chemistry” labs for chem 1a. so the lab manual is going to be different if you get in to those labs. theyre going to announce which ones are green chemistry labs during the first week. they might even announce it prior to the fall semester so just beware.</p>
