Chem 1A final = crazy?

Right now, if I add in the 1.6% of extra credit and stuff, I have an 83~84. Something tells me I'm effed at getting an A- :(
Why was that final so ridiculous? Please tell me they will do something about adjusting the syllabus-given grades taking into consideration the retardedness of their final exam...

Hopefully, they'll do something about the grade distribution.

^^^^ this is why taking chem 1a in spring is better.

all the surveys are already in the grade. the only thing left is the 6 iclicker pts. Also since there are over 1000 pts in the class, 6pts doesn't equal .6% it's a little less. maybe around .5 ish.

dude, the surveys are currently out of 2 pts each, making the total > 1000. therefore, those will be subtracted out of the total to make the bonuses actually bonuses.
(2/2 is not a bonus. 2/0 is a bonus). the 2/2 in the gradebook is just there to show that you did the bonus activity and will get the pts

i hope im right :)
...for all of our sakes

It better be .6% at least because I will be very upset If I get a 72.95% and get a "C".....this sucks I had an 81% last week T.T

I e-mailed my GSI and he said from what he hears that unfortunately, the final won't be scaled back at all. Besides the iClicker points, the final grades are the final grades.

Are the 6 iclicker points a guaranteed .6% in our grades then. I don't understand how it can be .5-.6, shouldn't it just be .6% up.

^
yes
if the class is out of more than 1000 pts then 6 iclicker pts wont be worth as much as if the class was worth only 1000 pts. thus around .5-.6

santabarbara, no where does it say above 800 is an A, its above 880 to get an A! damn, im screwed too, with 1.6% more, i'll still end up with a C. i wish i never had to take chem 1a, i hate it now so fiercely.. lol. but yeah hominid's right - we should've taken it in spring.. with some sane graders..
k but i did read in douseky's email that bspace grades are falsely low - because of the bonuses not being actual bonuses.. but they're not likely to help us much, it's probably only 10 points.. im still hoping for a lower cutoff. :(

Uh, I don't see why everyone is going bananas. Pick-a-Prof shows that Stacy gives out 44% A's of some sort and 47% B's of some sort.

This distribution is significantly better than other professors'. I took the course in Fall 2006 with Pines and he only gave out 23% A's of some sort. So, chill out, it could be much worse.

agreed....

I would agree with you tastybeef, but it seems like that curve doesn't apply to us this year.. I don't know anyone who's still getting an A after that final. Perhaps only 10% will get A's.. there seems to be a huge shift in grade distribution or something.

everyone's hopes and dreams are dying after one class. ooh boy. everyone needs to relax.

i agree with batman17. who cares if you get a C- or even an F in this class? AS LONG AS you do well you in other classes, it is definitely possible to still get above 3.8 and still get into a decent med school.

also, if this test was as hard as some people say, where alot of students drop 5-10%, i'm guessing they will lower the cutoffs. they still need to give a certain amount of A's B's C's. also notice that they say the distributions will not be revealed so...

yea we should do better in our other classes
too bad it only gets tougher from here on out
guess going to grade inflated privies is better...

naahhh

being a bear RULES despite chem1a

Yeah really...some people seriously need to chill.
The way I think about it really is, there are some people out there that did well on this final. Not everyone failed it, just most of the people that most people are talking about did pretty poorly because they are the ones most vocal about it.
There NEEDS to be a curve, because that is just how school is. Yes, it totally sucks and is very unforgiving but that's just the way it is. Berkeley has grade deflation, and chem 1a is a weeder class for a reason.
But, if you guys that did poorly seriously let yourself be weeded, be discouraged from the "premed" track because of one not so great course, then maybe the track was never meant for you in the first place? Maybe it's not so much about how smart you are, but about integrity and persistence. Like, it doesn't get easier from here. There's only going to be more competition, harder courses, more ****ed up grading by people that don't care about you, and if premeds can't take it mentally OR emotionally and to be cheesy "stay the course", then maybe they truly aren't cut out to be premeds.

Sorry if that's harsh, but I think it's the real world guys.

lol, yeah i guess you guys are right.. some of us did over react a little too much because of the final grades.. the final message is don't give up your dreams because of one class.. and i guess keep trying harder.. that includes me. haha k goodluck with the rest of your classes. :)

i would have done the same on this final if i had not studied for it at all...i was studying gibbs free energy and lewis dot structures and titration graphs (all the things we actually learned), not doing research on house paint and making recipes with indicators.

the MC were supposed to be easier than midterm 4, but i seriously did not think so.

i have received news from a source of the highest authority which cannot be disclosed that the ranges are going to be lowered because of the difficult final.

yay
