UCB Online Schedule of Classes: Search Results

there are 2 lecs still available but all labs are full

can i still sign up for chem 1a? my telebears appt is monday so i need to decide fast! will they have more lab openings on monday? or perhaps during phase 2? help!

Can't tell you for sure, but you can waitlist for a lab section which automatically waitlists you for the lecture. Hopefully they will open more lab sections, either for phase 2 or in the adjustment phase.

Worst comes to worst, you just attend the waitlisted lab and lecture waiting to be cleared - this lets you keep up with the work while you wait to become a confirmed student. Also, talk to the GSI handling the lab section and to the lecture professor, they may prioritize clearing you off the waitlist compared to someone who isn't attending the classes or isn't actively talking to the instructors.

No guarantees, but past posts on CC indicate that often additional labs or discussions are opened up when there is room in the lecture and there are waitlisted students. Of course, if there aren't any more GSIs to run the sections or if the lab rooms are all booked or if there is a budget issue, then they may not, but from what I read on CC you can usually expect some number of waitlisted students get cleared for most classes.

Pick one where you are highest on the waitlist if possible - being number 2 on the waitlist in one lab section improves your odds compared to being number 7 in a different section.

Keep trolling the schedule system to see if sections open or if the waitlist drops rapidly in other sections, since you can log on and switch sections during the remaining time in Phase 1 and then again in Phase 2 once you pass your appointment time, and then in the adjustment period, and of course the department may help switch you to clear the waitlist during the first few weeks of class.

Most science classes don't allow you to waitlist on labs but you can always check on schedule.berkeley.edu

Yeah, try to waitlist for the lab and enroll in lecture. What they do sometimes is they open some sections up before phase 2. Check back periodically. I remember one time, I just checked schedule.berkeley.edu randomly to find out that they opened up 2 sections for a science class I was waitlisted. I guess they didn't get around to emailing the good news out, so I beat the rush.

You'll find that many Chem and Bio classes limit their enrollment not based on lecture, but based on labs. Knowing Berkeley, if it weren't for labs, they would probably have 2000 people in a Chem 1A lecture. So if the labs are full, that essentially means that the lecture is full and I don't believe they let you sign up for the class. Just waitlist yourself and hope you get into a lab, spots usually open up.
