It is the same link http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/micro/ucbchem1a as the special Cal OWL plus ebook offer at $67. Item two there is the prep program.

Got it. Thank you. :-)

Hey rider,

I already bought the Cal-specific OWL + ebook for $67, but do you think it would help to have a physical textbook just for reference? I’m thinking of getting a used one for about $15 off Half… but only if the textbook will be useful for Chem 1B/Chem 3 referencing.

The eBook will be all you need for reference.

hey rider, your posts are really helpful. i just have a quick question: I already bought the textbook on ebay (chemistry science of change 4th for $10!!!), but still need OWL. I do not like ebooks because theyre bad for my eyes so do i need to buy the $67 package or can I buy the 1 semester for $33.49? are both OWLs the same? thanks

OWL is the same. 33.49 is for only OWL, no ebook, and is a regular price available to students from any school. The $67 offer is a special arrangement that was negotiated by the Chem department, where the publisher gives you the same OWL access code but also an ebook version of the text. This is not available to others, it is a custom offer through the special Cal link.

You register for OWL, choosing the textbook used for this course from among all the general chemistry texts they support, then entering a code that links your OWL account to the GSIs handling grading. That sends them the homework results for the assignments you will recieve each week.

rider, so we can buy the $33.49 OWL offer rather than the $67 offer? i want to buy the OWL code + textbook, no ebook for me.

so under the required/recommended materials, the bundle set says this
* TITLE:Chemistry: Science of Change Pkg (Custom)
* AUTHOR:Oxtoby
* EDITION:4th
* COPYRIGHT YEAR:2009
* PUBLISHER:Cengage Learning Custom Publishing
* ISBN:9781111700171
so i was wondering if this book is the same as the recommended chem book: [Amazon.com: Chemistry: Science of Change (9780030331886): David W. Oxtoby: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Chemistry-Science-David-W-Oxtoby/dp/0030331889)

^Good question.

It is a custom edition, which is part of a negotiated lower cost compared to the standard textbook. However, what that means varies and I can’t say without seeing both to compare.

Sometimes it is just a switch to paperback format or just a unique number to protect the selling price of the normal edition. Sometimes there are chapters removed (those not being used in the class at Cal). Sometimes, the standard textbook is used for a sequence of two classes, such as Phys 8a and 8b. The custom edition for one course has only the material covered in that class, making it quite a bit shorter than the standard text.

If the reading assignments and homework are given in a way that you can match up easily - i.e. read chapter 5 (topic xxx) or do problems 1, 4, and 7 at the end of chapter 7 (topic yyy)- then the renumbering of pages doesn’t affect you. you simply find the chapter in your book for topic xxx or yyy. If assignments are in the form of “read pages 126 to 154” then page numbering could be an issue. It can still be handled - you just need to compare your text and a friend/classmate’s custom edition - that lets you “translate” the assignment. Since many classes list the assignments well in advance, you can do the translation all at once or for many weeks at a time.

Absolutely no difference between the OWL you buy regularly at the $34 price and the one in the special promotion for $67. All that changes is the inclusion of an e-book in the special promotion.

ah ok thanks rider. so i was thinking of buying the cal-owl offer and rent the iclicker for $85 and maybe buy the textbook later on if i really need it. rather than buying the owl/textbook package. is this a better option?

Rent the iclicker for $85? Are you crazy? Unless that $85 was including the $67 for the OWL+ebook.

Regarding the I-Clicker, it might be more cost effective to buy one used. If you are going to take more than one class at Cal that requires that, it would be wiser to purchase than to rent.

it’s $85 including the OWL+ebook

oh, do any other sciences or GE classes require iclickers?

^ I think Mieghan wanted to use them for Bio 1AL, but we never used them. Besides that… not really. It’s really a waste.

rental is definitely cheaper in the long run. Essentially only the beginning chem class uses the clicker

Is chem the only class at Berkeley that one will ever take that uses the clicker??? Just wondering…

Can I buy the access code alone for $33.49 if I already have a Berkeley custom textbook for Chem 1A?

^Yes 10char

I’m selling the softcover Chemistry textbook custom edition (bought it last semester) for $30! Contact me if interested :D
