Course Materials (Chem 1A, Chem 1AL, NST 10)

I'm an incoming freshman for this fall semester, and I have some questions regarding the required course materials for Chem 1A, Chem 1AL, and NST 10.

For Chem 1A, these are the required materials:

TITLE:Chemistry Pkg (Custom w/ OWL)

AUTHOR:Oxtoby

EDITION:

COPYRIGHT YEAR:

PUBLISHER:Cengage Learning Custom Publishing

ISBN:9781133497608

NEW:$166.00

USED:$124.50

TITLE:iClicker Classroom Response System w/Barcode

AUTHOR:Holtzbrinck

EDITION:

COPYRIGHT YEAR:2006

PUBLISHER:Von Holtzbrinck Publishing Services/Macmillan

ISBN:9780716779391

NEW:$39.46

USED:$29.75

RENTAL:$19.71

What exactly is #1? When I searched for the ISBN in Amazon, it didn't find anything. Is it a Berkeley only edition textbook?
For #2, how exactly does an iClicker work? Is it something I should buy new, used, or is a rental fine? Is an iClicker something commonly used in other classes, and something I should buy rather than rent? To name a few classes I'll need to take in the future: Chem 3A, Chem 3B, Bio 1A, MCB 32, Psych 2, Econ 1...

For Chem 1AL, these are the required materials:

TITLE:Chem 1A Lab Manual Fall 2011

AUTHOR:Hayden-Mcneil

EDITION:

COPYRIGHT YEAR:

PUBLISHER:Hayden-McNeil Publishing

ISBN:9780738043685

NEW:$24.75

USED:$18.75

TITLE:Stud Lab Notebook

AUTHOR:

EDITION:

COPYRIGHT YEAR:NA

PUBLISHER:

ISBN:

NEW:$16.75

Is the Chem 1A Lab Manual Fall 2011 something I can buy only through Berkeley, making $24.75 the cheapest price I can get it for?
What is the Stud Lab Notebook? Is that just a normal notebook, or is it something specific?

For NST 10, these are the required materials:

Regarding the materials for NST 10... I feel completely confused when I look at it. What are these materials? Is there somewhere I can get these for a cheaper price, or am I stuck with the Cal Student Store? I've heard the textbook is essentially useless for NST 10, but I'm going to major in Nutrition, so should I still buy it? I think I read somewhere that one of the things you buy for NST 10 comes with an e-book?

Thank you in advance!

I have the same question for Chem 1a. Can I just buy this one [url=<a href=“http://www.amazon.com/Chemistry-Science-Change-Available-Titles/dp/0030331889/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312165123&sr=1-1]Amazon.com:”>http://www.amazon.com/Chemistry-Science-Change-Available-Titles/dp/0030331889/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312165123&sr=1-1]Amazon.com: Chemistry: Science of Change (Available Titles Owl) (9780030331886): David W. Oxtoby: Books/url or is the Berkeley edition special?
I heard that some Berkeley editions are the same as the original only with a few pages left off while others are completely different. Which type is the Chemistry 1a textbook?

Ahh!!! Same question as OP for NST10…

But I think it means we have to choose one of the bundles?!

btw where did you find this info?

cheekboy34, you can find the list of materials you need from the Cal Student Store. Or by looking the class up in the online schedule of classes and there will be an option to “view books.”

From doing some research, it seems like the Stud Lab Notebook is full of carbon papers and not normal papers, so I guess I’ll need to buy that from the student store. I’ll probably hold off buying materials I need from the student store (like the lab manual and lab notebook) and the applications (like the OWL access and… whatever it is we need to buy for NST 10) until classes start though… Hopefully, the professor will clarify what the materials are. And it seems the iClicker is something you re-register every semester, so buying it used from Amazon should be fine.

So, the books with “available OWL titles” comes with OWL access? Sorry, this might sound like a stupid question, but I don’t want to overpay at the student store for these materials if I don’t have to.

If you buy the custom package, it will come will OWL access. All editions of the Chem 1A book are essentially the same, but be forewarned: if you want to buy the OWL access by itself make sure it comes in on time and that you’re sure the custom package offered by the Student Store doesn’t cost any less than an old version + a copy of OWL.

The lab notebook is like any other standard AP Chem class lab notebook with the carbon copies and all that fancy stuff. The lab manual is essential in that you will need to turn in pages from that book to your GSI during class.

prehealthdecal, I was wondering if you could explain exactly what OWL access is? =) Also, what do you mean by come in on time? I assumed it would be something you could buy online, and then bam, you instantly have access to it. Is that wrong?

And even if you say standard AP Chem class lab notebook… I didn’t do labs in my AP Chem class (I didn’t take the AP test; didn’t feel prepared; the class average was a 2), so I’m not familiar with the materials. Is it possible to buy the lab notebook for a cheaper price somewhere else, or is the student store’s price reasonable enough?

Is it confirmed that for this fall, the Chem 1A textbook is Chemistry: Science of Change by Oxtoby, the 4th edition will be used? I think it would be much cheaper to buy this online & the OWL access online separately than buying a full package for used even in the student store.
