I’m taking Chem 330 with Stratt this semester, and I’m a first year. For anyone who’s ever taken his class, are his exams really that difficult? I heard Rose-Petruck’s exams were easier, but Stratt’s lectures are really amazing, so I decided to stick with him and challenge myself.

Is it possible to do really well in his class? And any advice? Thanks!

It’s possible to do well in any class. CHEM0330 will cover the same material regardless of professor, and while exams will differ slightly remember that the class is curved (even if the exams are insanely difficult they will be so for everybody). I had Rose-Petruck when I took the class but had numerous friends in other sections, and the class averages on exams were pretty comparable between professors. If you have had AP Chem and did moderately well, chances are you will find the material to be mind-numbingly easy anyways. I have only heard amazing things about Stratt, and nothing about him being unfairly difficult. If you are totally convinced that Rose-Petruck will be easier, you can always register for his section and then go to Stratt’s lectures anyways. Good luck!

I had stratt for physical chemistry, and he was an excellent teacher. He didn’t seem too interested in making the class hard, but that might change for 0330.

The different professors don’t always cover the material at exactly the same rate, so it might not work to go to one prof’s lectures and take another one’s exams.

To be honest, I was in his class for the 1st week and hated his teaching. He seemed like a cool guy, but i just didn’t follow what he was saying. I know that there were a lot of ppl who felt the same since we all switched to Rose-Petruck’s class. I couldn’t care less about the difficulty, but I find Rose-Petruck to be a great professor and better than Stratt for me personally.

^And there’s the beauty of shopping: I refuse to take a math class with a professor whose class I fall asleep in/don’t follow. I’ve walked out on 3 different math professors during shopping periods, because within a half hour I knew I couldn’t learn well from them. Take the class with the professor that fits you best, and you’ll get the most out of it.

I’m nervous, because although he’s a great lecturer, he’s so theoretical. And I heard people do poorly in his class. Shopping period is over, so I can’t really do anything. I guess I just have to push myself. Ahh. I just want to do well.

I’d honestly not recommend taking him if you were a male worried about your Chemistry skills.

I got the impression he simply just didn’t give the same attention to his male students as his females. Not to suggest anything deviant at all, of course, he was just more brutal and less interested in working out problems with the class.

I found his teaching style to be fairly terrible and not of very much help at all.

His exams were awful, and the book will help you out little or not at all with them.

Frankly, if you love Chemistry, this is the class for you.

If you just want to fulfill a requirement, be it Pre-Med or Engineering, I strongly, strongly advise that you take another Professor.
