Chem 3A MT2

How did people do?

Anyone? I heard a girl finished in 35 minutes haha…

i thought it was the hardest thing ever :((((

Anyone have any idea of how big of a curve it’s going to be?

just the ususal curve, average = 60%= B minus -ish
need 1 standard deviation above average to get a solid A

We have to keep in mind that the material on this midterm was far different from the usual pedersen/volhardt/frechet midterms, so I don’t think it’s safe to assume the averages will necessarily match up; I still think, however, it can be anywhere between 40 and 60.

Also, is it 1 or 1.5 SD for a solid A? I’ve heard both. And for a low average of, say 55 or 60, how big does the SD tend to be?

Nope, it shouldn’t be that hard. Ochem is ochem. It’s 1 SD for an A. SD tend to be around 15-20 percent

The material on the midterm did not dramatically deviate from the concepts emphasized by vollhardt/pedersen/frechet. The only unusual question I found on the midterm was number 5 dealing with the elimination reaction and products that were diastereomers. Everything else was alright and dealt with stuff that was from lecture. I felt like that fifth question was very conceptual and similar to the hard questions asked in chem 1a last semester.

You’re right, it only really deviated from pre-2005 exams.

I thought for the most part, it wasn’t too bad except for the middle 3 questions in which she threw some curveballs. I thought the diastereomer question was one of the easier of the middle 3 as long as you were clear about how to deal with hybridization. Other than that, it all depended on whether you can appropriately rotate molecules either in your head or on paper. Mechanisms and synthesis were easy.

So I got my test back today and my GSI said the average is around 40 something out of 100. LOL

not so easy meow was it? XD

@stevenboi…are you serious? my friend told me that but i thought he was joking x.x. great. how’d you do? i have to wait till my lab next week to get it.

Ummmm, I did well :). I am happy with my score. Hard work does pay off after all :D. Yea, people have been saying that their GSI said the average is around 35-40 with a standard deviation of 18? We will have to see the official numbers tomorrow in class.

^ he got the top score

No I didn’t! :(

Yeah, the most common number I’ve heard for the average is ~38. I have to wait till Friday…

Hopefully she doesn’t curve down because of the low average.

So the average is 40 with an approximate SD of 22. So can we reliably say that an A- is around 62 and a solid A is around 73?

hmm so would 40 be a B or a C? what about a 30?

40 would be a B-/C+ I think, anywhere above 60 is an A

^ he got an 82
