shinydrag,
thanks for the advice, that gave me a good idea of what I need to do. in fact i think i’m going to do exactly what you said and take chem 4 p/np. it sounds like chem 4 really prepared you for chem 6a.

@Kings:

yeah pretty much ; ) my study habits sucked so bad as a freshman

@92faim:

no problem at all dude, yeah chem 4 did prepare me for chem 6a, the only warning i can give is that the lab reports are killer but when looking back at them (like a few weeks ago) all of that looked and are easy to me now.

Sorry, I don’t know if this is a dumb question, but how do P/NP classes factor into your GPA?

the beauty of P/NP is that it doesnt get factored into GPA ; )

Ohhhh so if you’re doing badly in one class and don’t want to jeopardize your GPA, you can just switch to p/np. Is there a time you have to switch by in the quarter?

yeah, you have to change it by fourth week of the academic quarter. but you cannot use p/np for major requirements FYI.

i’d advise going into 6A first and switching into 4 if you really can’t handle it. believe it or not, the chem 4 professor acknowledges that some people need some time to realize whether they can handle a certain class, and there’s plenty of time to catch up. just make sure to talk to your 6A professor, and they can gauge your readiness for the class, and suggest chem 4 as an alternative if you REALLY need it.

the disadvantage of being off-track with the genchem series seems like a lot of inconvenience to me.

Ok for those who have not had chemAP in high school…

I took REGULAR High school chemistry. I knew I was going to work my ass off in the chem6 series. I got all A’s in chem6A,B,BL, and C. Just do your homework and utilize any help sessions available. It’s honestly all up to you as far as how well you want to do in the class.

lets just say a enroll into chem 6A and decide i can’t handle it would i be able to drop it and take chem 4 right away or do i have to wait til winter quarter to enroll in chem 4?

you are allowed allowed to add a class up until the 2nd week of the quarter. If there is still space in the Chem 4 class, then you can drop your 6A and add yourself to Chem 4.

I feel that 2 weeks may not give you enough time to know if the class is not right for you. At the very most, the only thing you can gauge yourself with is a quiz within the first 2 weeks.

no, you can drop 6A without penalty as long as it’s done before 4th week, and can transfer into 4 anytime before the 3rd week. the chem 4 professor acknowledges this every year, and always gets a couple of students doing the shuffle between lectures.

if you’re really iffy, you can attend chem 4 lectures and see how they compare. they won’t even know you’re in the classroom, and you can check out the textbook at the library.
