Is it bad to take Chem 4?

I'm a Chemistry major, and I might take Chem 4. Would that put me behind?

not at all, though it would be preferred to stay on-track with the majority of freshmen for friends/prof choices/scheduling facilitation. summer school can fix that.

i would take chem 6a instead of chem 4. that way you'll be done with the chem 6 series by the end of the year.

not everyone's ready to take chem 6a, though. some people never even take a substantial chemistry class in high school.

-a chem 4 TA

looking back i should have taken chem 4
i was totally not prepared for chem 6a and it didnt help i didnt have good studying habits

you just make chem 6c during summer school and youll be back on track

Take chem 6, what are ya? Scared?

some are ... like that kid who got a 4 in AP chem (and would normally be placed into 6ah or 6b) and still took chem 4.

honestly, i would never stay in a class if i got bored. easy A, whatever. my time's more valuable than that.

Meh, I guess they're not as cool as you or I.

Also, my time is worth nothing, so I'll gladly waste it in a boring class. In fact, I excel in boring classes. Everyone else seems to die halfway through a lecture. Me? I'm still firing on all cylinders.

Quick question astrina, did you find o-chem challenging at all? Also, how'd you go about studying for it?

sigh, i hate ochem.

but it's nice that all the ochem you need to know for the mcats is in ch 4-9, 11, and 17-25 (i think?) and it's all super watered down so now i've forgotten all but the essentials. :D i liked g.chem a lot better...hehe.

For studying, do practice problems galore!

I can do that.

I'm just worried I'll end up memorizing mechanisms, instead of you know, learning them.

ochem was lots of fun ... but i didn't think so until the third quarter of it. if you think you like it, try taking the grad electives - they're awesome! as for studying, it's sad to say, but memorization goes a long way. after awhile you'll start to see patterns of reactions pop up, which makes new reactions much easier to learn.

and yeah, if you're MCAT-bound, you're going to be memorizing a lot anyway :)

I know someone who never took chemistry in high school but still did fine in chem 6a. Don't fear it.
