Chem class timeline for an engineer with AP credit?

I will have Chem 102 and 104 credit (lectures), but the school doesn't give credit for the labs. So do I have to take a lab for my first two semester without taking any chem classes? I want to take Organic or Quantitative analysis, but they require the labs. I heard Quantitative gives credit for previous labs. Is this true? Does anyone know what I should do? I'll talk to my advisor during registration, but I want to have as much information as I can get.

Definitely talk to your adviser during registration. Depending on your situation they may recommend that you just take Chem 102 and 104 with the accompanying labs, despite taking AP exams. Most students fair better by taking classes that they have technically already displayed proficiency for. At best you do stellar in these classes which will give you a great GPA to start with. At worst you find them more rigorous than anticipated, but fair far better than if you’d gone ahead with Orgo right off the bat!

Are you in chemical engineering? I don’t know of any other engineering major that requires orgo

I’m in MatSE. It is required for those with Biomaterials concentrations.
Bioengineering requires it as well.

I’ve heard that Chemical Engineering doesn’t accept Chem AP credit, anyway. It would make sense.

I want Orgo as soon as possible, for I’ve just finished a semester of it in high school. There’s no sense in waiting.

that’s true. chemE’s wouldn’t be taking the 100 chem sequence anyway.

if that’s the case, then you are correct. you will most likely have to take the lab courses (103 and 105) as standalone classes, which is good and bad news. the bad news is that the pre-reqs for orgo are chem 104 and 105. therefore, without lab credit, you will not be able to take orgo your freshman year. the good thing is that the labs courses contain their own lectures so you won’t miss anything by not taking 102 or 104. gen chem labs are also really easy and won’t take much time outside of class.

that’s basically it from what i can tell. an advisor can give you a better idea of your options when you go in for registration. though, as a science major at uiuc, i would strongly recommend taking the intro gen chem classes again. they usually end up covering some material not covered in ap. not to mention, half of 104 is an intro to organic so you might get a better idea of what chem 232 will be like. at worst, you will get an easy A. just my .02 though, ymmv.
