Orgo/Gen Chem

Since I'm concentrating in chemistry this isn't necessarily a question for me but I was curious....if someone starts out taking only organic and doesnt do gen chem does he/she (I hate PC) still have to fulfill the prereq?

Assuming you mean "required class for medical school admission" when you say "prereq," then yes, you will have to get credit for it somehow. That would be why it's a "prereq." Medical schools require freshman-level chemistry (i.e. gen chem), if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not familiar with how your school's chemistry classes work, but how would you take orgo without first receiving credit for gen chem anyway?

Piccolo, if you jump straight into orgo (20/30 or 17/27) then you'll still have to take a gen chem course to fulfill the prereqs. The problem is that Harvard won't let you drop down to intro gen. chem. after you've taken Orgo b/c Orgo has as a pre-req Chem 7 or 'equivalent.' This means you'll end up taking p-chem or you'll have to find a high-level course that also has a lab, which is touch b/c most of the high level courses assume you're working in a lab on your own time so they don't assign an extra lab component.

How about taking chem 40 + using my 5 on AP Chem to replace the other semester of gen chem (for med schools that allow this)?

That'd work. Just make sure you get the AP listed officially on your Harvard transcript as soon as you get to Cambridge so that you're not scrambling around during application season.

... No it wouldn't. Med schools will not accept AP credit for their pre reqs (with few exceptions).

If you're majoring in chemistry, this shouldn't be an issue.

but the undergraduate university often does accept AP credit, and gives you credit for the course that is offered at the university. As far as the Med School is concenred, you got the credit from your undergrad, not college board.

Your college transcript will say that the credits are from AP and med schools mostly will not accept AP credits to satisfy pre req classes unless you have done more advanced classes in the subject while in college. But for the OP - as norcalguy said - if you are majoring in the subject you should not have a problem - obviously you will be doing more advanced classes in the subject.
