Chem - Honors to AP

Hey,
I'm taking an accelerated Chemistry class this year. If I study outside of class, is it possible to take the AP exam and get a 5? Would this be a viable idea, or should I have a year of Chemistry before taking AP Chemistry. I am an average learner and of average intelligence for the most part. I would have support from the AP Chemistry teacher, like notes, practice problems, etc.

Thanks very much.

Well, unless your accelerated course follows the AP curriculum, you probably should wait. Chemistry is one of the more difficult exams to self-study and in NY for example, the regents curriculum even at the honors level leaves out a lot of important stuff, like kinetics, and more in-depth coverage of all of the other topics.

Well the chemistry teacher I have, is the AP teacher, and will hopefully be very willing to give me everything I need for AP Chemistry, and I might also be able to get a tutor for some things. So I would have an incredible vault of resources. So what the teacher does/doesn't cover becomes irrelevant, its more of whether its actually possible for me to do this, like time-wise and topic wise.

The topics would be extremely hard to cover without going over in class. IMO, it would mean alot of extra time. And I'm truly not insulting you or anything, but I know several extremely intelligent people who worked hard in an AP Chem class all year after Honors Chem and got a 3 on the exam. I guess it depends on you and the amount of work you're willing to put into it.

I would advise doing the AP Chem next year. It is definitely doable this year
but will be a stretch in terms of effort required and fun you should be having
when learning something this cool :)

I would wait, too. You'll miss out on some important labs, and many of the more advanced concepts become much easier to swallow after you let first year Chem gel over in your head.

DON'T DO IT NOOOOOO!!!
Whoa sry for that. Ap chem has got labs and stuff, and the course just goes real in depth. Take the class next year and take the exam with it. The exam with the class is not too diffucult (though not easy)

no, but what we are doing in our honors chem course is taking the SAT II subject test at the end of the year
