Chem or ChemE for Pre-Med?

I wanted to know if when they looked at your GPR for med school admissions, they take into note your major. I really want to have ChemE as a back up, but I don't know if they'll allow for a lower GPR because of it. If they'd rather see a higher GPR, I'll do Chem, which is supposed to be easier. I just wouldn't want to give up that back up.

I would be shocked if they did not consider the major along with the gpa. In this situation, I would take the advice of my advisor who told me it is always better to make a conservative decision when it comes to your education. ChemE will by far leave you better off if you do not happen to make it to med school or if med school just doesn’t end up being what you truly want to do. There are many research areas in ChemE that can be health related, especially biomaterials. If you come through the 4 years with a good engineering gpa (around 3.5 and above) I would imagine that it would very impressive to a med school too.

From my friends daughter who was talking to admissions at A&M. For Med school, you can be a ballet major - all they really care about is GPA & MCAT scores.

If your goal is Med school, major in Chemistry. The most important factor for medical schools is your GPA. Second is your MCAT. If you feel like you can make a 3.5+ GPA in ChemE (which I think is probably doable) then do it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t risk it.
