Out of curiosity, is the online test practically an open-book test (book, internet, high school notes, etc.)? And for current students, was the test hard or did it ask basic chemistry questions?

no its not open book. i was checking it out yesterday and it said to follow the honor code, meaning no books or checking the internet. the only thing u can use is a periodic table and a common ion sheet which u can print out/download.

Okay, thanks!

Where on Blackboard is the Chem Placement Test? I don’t see it on the First-Year Pre-Arrival Checklist or anywhere else…

Because not everyone needs to take chemistry. If you look up the chemistry department, it tells you that you have to take a chem placement test to get into chem 141.

So do you take it later online during orientation? I’m planning on taking chem 141 next year, or the year after.

The placement test is also for those that want feedback on areas in which they need to brush up/or prep prior to class. Since Chem 135 (Intro to Chem) will no longer be offered, the lowest level Chem course Emory offers is Chem 141. Thus, it’s sink or swim with the premeds if you want to take Chem.

(Sry, but I don’t consider ‘The Way Things Work’ to be a real Chem course.)

Wait, so I can just sign up for chem 141 without taking the placement test now?

^I thought we’re supposed to register for classes in August, a couple days before classes begin.

Actually, we register for classes the day before (Aug 26) classes begin haha. I was just asking if I don’t need to take the placement test anymore since the website said to take it over the summer.

reaching:

Not sure if you HAVE to take the test. My point was just that your score does not matter bcos if you want to take Frosh Chem, 141 is all that Emory offers (which is a shame, IMO).

So they don’t offer chem 135 anymore? Where did you hear about this? I couldn’t find anything about that on the Emory site.

I was speaking with a Chem prof back in April. He indicated that 135 wasn’t working out and that they were gonna discontinue it. It was his understanding that Spring 09 would be the last time it was being offered. Of course, anything can change in academia. :)

Chem 135 is only 2-3 years old anyway. When I was a freshman in 2005, it wasn’t offered. I wanted to take a chem class, so I took 141, even though I wasn’t premed. It wasn’t easy by any means, but it wasn’t impossible either. (I wouldn’t do it again, by the way. Not worth the hassle for a non-science major.)

If you’re dead set on a chem class for whatever reason, take 141. If you just need the GER, take How Things Work. I’ve heard it’s fairly easy in comparison, but actually really, really interesting (especially for us humanities majors).

If you got a 4 or 5 on the AP Chem test, you should get an e-mail from the Freshman Organic teacher inviting you to take Chem 171.

I’m so looking forward to this e-mail. I love orgo. :)

I’ll call them about whether or not I need to take the placement test to enroll in chem 141. Honestly, I just want a challenging, yet interesting, chemistry class and chem 141 seems to fit that description.
