Are there any Penn chemistry professors who are especially good or popular? What does he/she teach, and what makes him/her so wonderful?

don't take from dmochowski if you can possibly avoid it.

Petrivito has his own fan club for some reason. (he is usually a Chem lab professor however)

Maybe CC has made me a cynic, but does this relate to the application question by chance? :)

there's a site w/reviews on all of them...otherwise, there's also a thread in the college forum on pennster

I've heard bad things about Dmochowski, but I don't think he's quite as bad as some of the other ones. Petrivito is NOT good, most students can't stand him... his fan club on facebook is mostly poking fun at his riduculous lab lectures (go to one and you'll know what I mean... most of the class never goes back). I have yet to hear one good thing about Voet.

Davis and Davies are your two best bets (yes, they are different people). Last year Davies team tought with Petrivito and everyone loved chass when he taught, but hated it when Petrivito taught. I had Davis last year, and our class was tought in coordination with Dr. Voet's class (we covered the same material at the same times, took identical tests, etc). Everyone seemed to really like Dr. Davis (myself included), and when he had to guest lecture for Dr. Voet, all of my friends in Voet's section could not stop talkign about how much better Davis was.
Dr. Davis is quite an interesting guy as well... he likes to make jokes in class, and while he expects a LOT from his students, if you keep up it'll be worthwhile He has taught at Harvard for 15 years and Penn for over 15 years, and he's really fun just to go talk to during office hours as well.

Hope that helps :)

argh! i wish i would've known that earlier...i read reviews for Voet, and they seemed terrible...and the class in the freshman table said Voet/Davis, so I didn't sign up

If it said Voet/Davis though it probably means that they're going to team teach it this semester. Last semester they had two completely different sections, and they were listed only by the one they would be teaching. If it has a "/" in it, I'm guessing they'll just split the units. Who are you taking instead?

Dr. Dai...so am i completely screwed?
