Chem sucks

freshman have M W F Chem 21L Lecture, Recitation on Tues. or Thurs. and and a lab on M, T, W, or Th. That means only one day of the week without Chem. wow

so far, my schedule has me having chem everyday

UltimateFrisbee - I've seen you all over this board in disbelief about how often engineering/lab classes meet. Honestly, it sucks, but that's just the way it is. That's why Duke strongly, strongly recommends that you don't do 2 lab classes in 1 semester during your first year, and it's something that most people try to not have to do too often. I know that you find it hard to believe, but that's just how often science classes meet - as tons of people have said before, the labs don't usually go for all 4 hours (most of the times they don't even come close to lasting that long), and most people skip a good number of lectures. If you don't want to have classes that meet that often, maybe science just isn't the right path for you, because even the friends I've spoken to at other schools agree that science classes meet much more often than humanities classes. That's just...the way it is.

Isn't egr 53 and chem 21 reccomended for first semester? How do we get out of having two labs in a semester if we pretty much have to take them anyway?

I'm not complaining, just wondering why Duke would suggest that and then outline a course schedule that has two labs

yeah, that's true haha

OK, I'm a Trinity kid, so I didn't realize that. But I guess that's just why Engineering has a reputation of having students who have to work the hardest. Sorry, guys.

hmm... yea... I agree, this scheduling is going to be a problem ><

It's not that bad, in all honesty. I know someone who took 4 lab classes first semester and did just fine, he just didn't have much free time during the day. I took two lab classes simultaneously last semester and it ended up not being a big deal. Yes, its more work than the Trinity kids have, but that's why we're not in the school of Arts and Crafts (I kid, I kid... mostly).

A few Duke students have recommended me taking Calc and Chem first semester, both with labs. They've mentioned that it's actually quite common for freshmen, but based on my alternate bookbag it seems like I won't be able to avoid having 8:30 am classes a few times a week. Blech.

Calc & Chem is incredibly common for 1st semester freshmen. When we speak about lab-classes, we're mostly referring to the classes that include 4 or 5-hour labs -- quite different than Math 32L. I remember being confused about that before I got to Duke, too.
