Can a current student tell me about chemical free housing? I would be interested in this, but I heard you have to be resposible for your roomates behavior as well. Is this true? I know there will be drugs and such in college, but I would like to know that I don't have to worry about it in my dorm room. Thanks.

Chem-free housing basically is a floor in one of the buildings in each community where everyone on the floor signs a contract (during housing signups) saying that they will not use any substances, including alcohol at all. This goes for downtown as well. If an RA catches you drinking or doing drugs downtown, they can (but it will depend on the RA if they will) write you up. As far as I know, you are not responsible for your roommate’s behavior but if you both choose to be chem-free then you probably won’t have a problem.

I live in Chemical Free housing in Hunter Hall, Mountainview. Should you choose to sign up for chem-free housing, you will be held accountable for substances both ON and OFF campus. As Qtjan5 mentioned, an RA has the authority to write you up for any breach in your housing contract. You would not be held accountable for the actions of your roommates or suitemates, although I would highly advise that you ensure they not do anything stupid that has the possibility of getting you involved.

I am not sure how it works in every community, but there is only one chem-free floor in Mountainview. It’s the 4th (highest) floor in Hunter.

Although I can say that the chem-free floor in Hunter isn’t absolutely chem-free, it is definitely FAR less involved with frat parties, beer pong; etc. This also means that there are people to hang out with on the weekends, and we’re the only floor that’s awake by 10AM on a Saturday. ;)

I might be interested in this as well. Are you still allowed to be at parties where alcohol is present? I don’t was to be antisocial.

Yes, you can go to parties where alcohol is present.

You cannot possess or consume alcohol, but you may be in a setting where it is present provided that setting isn’t on a chemical-free floor. Being on a chem-free floor doesn’t make you anti-social, rather, it provides you with non-alcoholic alternatives on Friday nights. Since everyone on that floor signed the same contract as you, you can go out with them on Friday nights to a place where alcohol isn’t necessarily present.

You don’t need alcohol to have fun in college. :)
