This is a Junior year for my kid. He has been an All Honors student with accelerated Math. However, this past year as a Sophomore he struggled with teachers. Even while maintaining his GPA last year the Bio Honors teacher did not recommend him for Chemistry Honors. He was allowed to waive himself into this course which we did but now they cannot fit Chemistry Honors into his schedule. He was recommended AP US History and AP Music Theory, which he is taking this year. The question is
what is more important to take AP US History or Chemistry Honors if only 1 can fit in his schedule?
can he do Chemistry honors outside of the school online ? (what are some highly recommended places to do this?)
do colleges look at what we did outside of school course work? the school might not put it on his school transcript.
if they dont accomodate him in the class is it ok to do Chemistry College Prep in school?
What are you looking for for his future science or humanities?
This is usually up to the school and is dependent on the state you live in so I would ask the GC
Ask if they put it on his transcript when you ask to the GC at my school they do and if they don't your application does have items for extra curricular activities.
It's pretty confusing by if it's ok or not. What is ok in reference to?
Can “regular chem” students take AP Chem and under what conditions? - important to investigate if that’s something your child is interested in.
Can he take Honors Physics or AP Physics 1 this year, and Honors Chemistry senior year? (It’s important to have bio, chm, physics, at any level, + 1 more scienc class, if he’s aiming for very selective universities).
Did you ever ask why his Biology teacher didn’t recommend him for Chemistry Honors? His teacher may have thought that he isn’t academically ready, and that should definitely be taken into account.
No he cannot take Physics this year. He was not placed in chem honors because it doesnt fit in his schedule with all the other stuff that he has. The GC tried. Now we are asking if he can let go of Spanish V Honors in 11th grade and see if chem honors fit that way. If not we have also asked if he can do Chem honors online? the point is even if he was recommended by the Bio Teacher it would not have been possible to fit his schedule. The bio teacher from what I know was busy retiring and was not interested in any talk or discussion. Just that she FELT it might be tough for him when he was already keeping up with the grades … it was a little frustrating … anyway. we are trying to see if it can be resolved one way or the other.
In our school they have to take a math, English, social studies and science class each year. So there would be no way that one of those would not fit into the schedule and that you would be choosing between music theory and chem, or history and chem.
Yes, Spanish V would not be necessary. Find out if he could take Chem or physics in its place.
I think science classes other than Earth Science are difficult to do online since they usually have a lab component and many colleges require bio, chem and physics with lab for admission.
He has Chem College Prep on his schedule with its lab. we are asking if he can take spanish V college prep instead and take Chem Honors instead if that fits in the schedule…due to some constraints of when that course is available. He does have science just that he doesnt have it Honors. Which is what we are striving towards. He’s been all Honors since 7th grade.
As far as colleges go, getting to Spanish IV is all that is needed. Any more should be out of interest…so college prep spanish would be better than college prep chem.
