Chemistry I and II at WPI

So I never got to take AP Chemistry in HS (only Pre-AP), nor did I take the test. However, I found out I can take the Chemistry placement exam to get out of the first two intro courses. Does anyone here have any experience with it and can tell me roughly what I should go over in preparation? Thank you.

it’s been a while since I took the exam (for CH1020) but I think it was mostly short answer questions, probably multiple choice too. here are the course descriptions, expect the exam to cover material that’s on here and not much more than that

I don’t remember if when you place out of a class that you’ll get credit for it? Here’s why it matters:

If you want to place out of something, my personal philosophy is that you should have a good reason, whether it’s because you want to take more advance courses in your field or pursue a side passion.

Just skipping courses for the sake of skipping courses isn’t a great strategy, if you’re not getting credit or making room for more meaningful classes. You risk missing out on the foundation. I’m not saying these course are super exciting, but there useful nonetheless. And, you can build your gpa much faster, if it’s a little easier for you. Just food for thought… So, did you place out?

WHAT!? No rate laws? No electrochemistry? WHATTTTTTT???

Rate laws are in CH1030. What jackbauer posted sounds pretty accurate. 50 multiple choice and I believe you need an 80% to receive credit.

I would say anybody who has taken high school chemistry has a pretty good chance of testing out of the first chem class. Testing out of CH1020 and CH1030 would likely require an AP class in HS.

You would be getting academic credit if you pass the placement test, however, you will not receive a letter grade. Your transcript would indicate that you “passed” the course, and it would count towards your degree requirements!

If you receive a 4 or 5 on the AP Chem exam you would get credit for CH1010.

remember, these are quarter (not semester) courses. Plenty of time for kinetics in other courses!!!
