If you're taking AP chem

Which topics have you covered so far? My teacher moves around. Somehow she doesn't follow the textbook (we use Chang). We did some basic honors chem stuff, like chemical forces, p table, lewis structure, formal charges, molecular geometry. Then we just finished rate laws. Now we are doing equilibrium, Kc, Kp, and so on. My parents have a friend who teaches chem in college and he says this curriculum is crazy. I think half (if not more) of my class is getting lost.

We go through each chapter in the book in order. We’re on chapter 5 now (Chemistry: The Central Science 11th*AP Edition) We’ve covered matter and measurement, atoms, molecules, and ions, stoichiometry, and aqueous reactions and solution stoichiometry,

We use Zumdahl Chemistry 6th edition, and right now we’re on chapter 7, which is on Atomic structure and Periodicity. Before this unit, we covered Chemical foundations; Atoms, molecules, and ions; Stoichiometry, Chemical Reactions and Solution stoichiometry, Gases, and Thermochemistry. And apparently we’re ahead of where the AP chem class from previous years were. Our class seems to be doing fine right now, and I myself find the class to be pretty manageable so far. So yea, the AP chem curriculum at your school does seem to be harder.

I use the same book as Taz2013, except it’s 7th edition.

I just had a test today on Ch. 8 and 9, bonding and hybridization. My teacher already posted all the work due for the rest of this semester, and it looks like we are gonna do Ch. 10 and 11, which is liquids and solids, and properties of solutions.

Our Ch. 12 is on rate law and stuff, likes look we are gonna do that in January.

It’s pretty nuts to be doing equilibrium so early, I think, but if you’re skipping around maybe not. Kc/Kp problems are some of the hardest stuff on the AP in my opinion.

AP Chem at my school has covered:
Basic things such as moles/periodic table usage, stoichiometry, aqueous solution / related reactions, molecular geometry, periodicity, electron configuration related things.
Empirical formula/nomenclature stuff.

I TA for the AP Chemistry class :)

@sutter112 We’re about to start the Chapter 8 and 9 unit. How hard was it?

@Taz2013, it wasn’t that hard. just really Lewis structures and naming, and then hybridization, if you haven’t learned already, is a pretty easy concept to grasp.

My class is on Chapter 5 Zumdahl amd we are behind. I will probably end up self studying it

dum dum I agree with you. It’s really hard. my family friend who is the chem prof says the teacher skips around that doesn’t make sense. but he says hopefully by next spring, March or so, we’ll be finishing up most of everything. Hopefully by then we’ll feel better. but I feel terrible now.

I use the same book as Fantasy, and we’re in Chapter 11.

Ch. 1: Matter & Measurements
Atoms, Molecules, & Ions
Stoichiometry
Aqueous Reactions & Solutions
Thermochemistry
Electronic Structure of Atoms (Wavelengths, line spectra, Bohr model, etc.)
Periodic Properties of the Elements
Basic Concepts of Chemical Bonding
Molecular Geometry & Bonding Theories
Gases
Ch. 11: Intermolecular Forces, Liquids, & Solids

do you guys use princeton AP chem book to review?

^ I haven’t even bought a review book yet lol. I’ll probably get one next year, or when the AP test approaches.

We use General Chemistry by Ebbing. We’ve covered all the tenth grade chem material, The Gaseous State, thermochemistry, and the rate of reaction. Right now we are on the chapter about equilibrium constant. AP chem is the hardest and fastest class in our school .

we use chang too. we did the first 9 or ten chapters in honors chemistry, a prereq for ap, in order. We are now on ch 14 with equilibrium. I thought we were behind…

I took it last year, you seem fine where you are. Sometimes the chemistry teachers will teach voltaic cells half-assed so make sure you cover ALL of that; it was one of my part 2 questions on the AP. That was just a quick tip, I know it won’t apply to you for a while.

How are people still on the fifth chapter? We finished the first four chapters on the first day in my AP Chemistry class. We’re currently studying buffered solutions.

OP, it’s funny how you guys are learning formal charges…when it’s not even in the exam.

I did see some problems using the knowledge of formal charges, even though indirectly. Like they ask which of the following… you have to know the formal charge of each element so like 0 0 0 is most likely to happen while 0 -2 2 is not.

Our class is going all over the places… We did organic. Now going back to gas laws. Gas laws are so easy.

We’ve just covered formal charges and bond enthalpy. It’s not too hard, but it’s a lot to think about.
