Chemistry Majors

Anyone know which schools are the best for undergraduate chemistry majors?
Chemistry seems like a rather broad field; are colleges with strong engineering/medical departments also strong in chem?

Right now, I'm looking at Dartmouth, Harvard, Brown, Yale, Washington (St. Louis), and Johns Hopkins. How would you rank their chem programs?

Harvard

Yale

Johns Hopkins

Washington (St. Louis)

Dartmouth

Brown
Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Washington have exceptionally strong pre-med programs and thus have great chem departments.
Other schools to consider: Cornell, MIT, Columbia, Chicago, UNC, Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley, Caltech

Strong pre-med programs = great chemistry dept? How'd you figure that? All the chemistry you need for pre-med are general chem, organic and quantitative analysis...strictly elementary stuffs. And that makes a great chemistry department?

True, a strong pre-med program does not always mean great bio/chem programs. However, Harvard, Hopkins, and Washington do have great chem departments. Note that colleges with weaker pre-med programs like Berkeley, MIT, Caltech, etc. have much better chem departments than Hopkins or Washington.

That's what I meant. Btw, where is Wisconsin?

Wisconsin is around #10 for chemistry. Very good and the chemistry building has been completely updated and expanded in the last year or two.

Wow, I didn't know Brown was so weak in Chemistry. It was my 2nd choice school too... should I reconsider?

It doesn't matter where you go.
They are all top schools where you'll get a great education in chemistry.
The ranks will probably differ, but the actual qualities are almost identical.
