Chemistry Olympiad 2014

@phoenix55555: sophomore

eyy hi five I’m a sophomore as well! @TeamRocketGrunt

Took the test today. I should have studied more, but I think I still got a 50+
We can talk about the test come April, I think

i didn’t expect it AT ALL, but i got notional nominee! My goal was making runner up, today was a pleasant surprise haha. can anybody help me prepare for the national exam? i have no idea what books to use and stuff

Wait, are you from the US? I’ve never heard of that terminology before…
Anyway, the national exam likes its orgo questions, so you probably want to study that. Klein’s Organic Chemistry is pretty good due to its skills-based approach. I like it

The national test is also just all around harder and can test on things that are best described as in-depth general chemistry. I recommend you comb through past national exams and attempt to fill in any knowledge gaps that you might have. The exams are quite static in terms of the material that they cover from year to year, as you will see

nope, i don’t want to reveal which district i am from but we had 220 people participate in our district this year, 12 people got nominated to take the national exam and 8 people were runner ups (just in case anybody from the nominees couldn’t take the national exam).
So should i just try to solve one national exam and see how it goes? and maybe use klein’s orgo book to fill my orgo knowledge?

@dhpride533 Did you show up and take the test “for fun” and score a 69/70? I think we’re same district haha. Anyways, I took the test today and made runner-up, not too disappointed at all

I did the local exam last week, and towards the end of the test, I was starting to get that thinking of “How many can I miss to not feel like a failure?” I was surprised though, because our test guy told us that the highest score for our section last year was a 44. I felt a little better after hearing that, because I think that I could have gotten that.

^ I felt the same last year, it turns out all my guesses were pretty accurate. That score would be considered high for my local area, lol…

The first test doesn’t even matter that much unless you are in a competitive local area. You can advance with like a 41 or something in my region.

Now it’s time to cram for the national exam.

Someone from my region last year only got runner up with 62/70. The scores were a bit lower this year though

I just hope that I make it to the national exam for my section; around 140 people took it. Since I was the only person who took the exam from my school, at least my teacher and I get to go to the banquet :D. I hope I can get one of those chemistry pins I read about on the ACS site.

Ha, if you don’t get one I can send you mine from last year. My banquet last year was kinda awkward, though I must say that if you plan to go into chemistry academia or chemical engineering the networking opportunities are superb if you are inclined to take advantage of them

@RedWings5535 nah im not that genius kid but i think we’re in the same district haha.

Thanks for the offer, @huehuehue32! I really did this whole thing recreationally; I used to hate chemistry, but AP chem has been entertaining for me.

How many days after taking the local test do you find out if you made nationals? Is it a phone call?

I found out literally the day after taking the local test via email, but I’m pretty sure that it really just depends on what local section you’re from.

Also, has anyone heard anything about how good the AoPS ChemWOOT is for preparing for this? And also, how good is the Francis Carey Organic Chemistry textbook they use?

To those of you who took the exam and used Zumdahl, did you feel that it prepared you for the exam properly?

@TeamRocketGrunt I felt that it prepared me pretty well, and that was with me skimming the book the night before.

Did anyone else use Chemistry: the Central Science by Brown to study for locals ?
