Chemistry Placement Exam at University of Michigan

I am new here and I'm not sure if I posted this thread in the right place.

Anyways, I am attending the University of Michigan in the fall and I have a few things to clear up. Nobody seems to have a straight answer to my question...so I am a bit confused.

I called the Office of New Student Programs and they said that the Placement exam (not the AP exam) can give you credits if you place out of a chemistry class. But I’ve heard different stories that BOTH the AP exam and placement exam can give you credits but not the placement exam alone. And if you do test out of the placement exam but did not do well on the AP exam then you will NOT get credits for the chemistry class you placed out of but you cannot take that class for credits. Which means I would need to fulfill my NS credits with more difficult classes and I could not go back and take the class I tested out of to get credits.
Sorry if it's difficult to understand...
But I need to know whether or not I should try to do well on the test...otherwise I may have to struggle through more difficult classes is order to gain my required NS credits. I am in LSA btw.
