Chemistry Stress Thread

My AP Chemistry teacher is not so good. Our class has no idea what she's talking about half the time. I have no idea what is going on in the class.

AP is in 2 weeks. I haven't started studying. What do you guys recommend I do? We use Zumdahl, but I find that so hard to read.

Also, I'm taking the Chemistry Subject Test in a week. I want a 750+.

What do you guys suggest I do now? What's the best plan of action?

buy princeton review, read it, do the practice problems. barron's is useless for ap chem. also, ap central on the collegeboard website offers previous year's frq's. doing those and timing yourself should give you a pretty good idea of specific topics you need t ostudy

I found that the 5 Steps to a 5 book was pretty useful. My AP Chem teacher wasn't the greatest, either, since she started teaching AP the year I took the course (heck, we didn't do labs until after the AP test); your textbook, on the other hand, is a valuable resource. It's hard to concentrate on when you start reading it, but once you get into the rhythm of things, things get more lucid. :)

Good luck!

if you had done USNCO it would have been so much easier...

I disagree with Tccc061990. I have PR and Barrons and if you have no idea whats going on half the time, get Barrons. It is a much more indepth review and will get you a lot closer to a 5. I'm also using it to sstudy for the SAT Subject test coming up.

Piccolo, how do you think you did on part II of USNCO? By the way, I agree that studying for the USNCO helps a lot with the AP test. However -- oddly enough -- I find the AP test to be harder; the questions on the AP are a little more convoluted than those on part I of the USNCO (but certainly not part II).

Slightly, I'm in the same boat. My AP Chem teacher has a lot of distractions this year, is not available for help, and doesn't do a good job explaining the material.

What's worst is that he scheduled our final for this Friday. That means it's now before my first two APs, Calc AB and US. So instead of devoting time to studying those and putting them into my (somewhat) long term memory, I'm trying to cram for Chem. It really sucks.

And I'm no good at chemistry, so I'm just hoping I don't blow it. The one positive thing about my teacher is that he insists we know more than we think we do - of course this could just be an attempt to stop us from pestering him. Ugh.

SlightlyConfused that sounds exactly like my ap chem class last year. I had no idea what I would face on the test, and my teacher was no help. I ended up skipping school the day before the test and did every free response on the college board site. That got me a 4. I also had a Kaplan review book but I don't recommend it. It was full of errors. I'm just glad I knew chem enough to catch those errors.

lobgent...you mean you didn't see my thread?

Lol, I'd say 80 - 85.....MINUS 45 points or so for not transferring all of my answers to the answer sheet in time...hence the "ghost camper" title.

Looks like a lot of us are in this situation.

I'm totally stressing out. I'm clueless in that class. I think I learned more in honors chemistry than in AP. not a good thing.

YES - same with REA: their book has an insane number of errors. If I had time I would write them all down and send them a letter, lol.

OK, I just recently handed in a practice scantron to my teacher which was done before studying, and I apparently got enough right on the M.C. to put me in a three range, which is fine by me. But I just started studying last night for like four hours, by only reading Princeton Review, and I'm feeling a little more confident. PR should have been my supplement to the course all year long - I've learned so much more from that review book than I have from the class, in a few hours of studying, too.

I just took a Kaplan Practice Test for Chemistry. Actually, I took one this afternoon (before skimming the book), and I got a 780. Then I studied all afternoon and took another one (Kaplan still) just a while ago, and I got a 660! I don't understand. Are Kaplan tests accurate? Because I'm freaking out now.

780? I think you have the wrong forum.

lol. but then i got a 660. which brings me back to the right forum.

Is it true that on the new SAT II chemistry, there is a ridiculous curve...as hard as biology. Like you can only miss 4 for an 800?

Anyone know?

No I mean you're in the wrong forum as in this is the AP forum.

You're looking for the subject test forum: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=581

lol...

But about that, yah it's true. I left two blank and I'm dead sure I got no more than 2 wrong yet I still got a 790.
