im about to start my freshman year in college and could anyone (especially those who have declared their major) tell me the advantages and disadvanteges of the chemistry and biochemistry major. ulitmately I will go to med school so which one would prepare me more? and what were some of your personal experiences, was it too tough?

the preparation either will provide for actual med school classes or the MCAT is minimal. The MCAT is too general for them to be of use, and Med School classes too specific for them to be of much help.

Biochem will be more helpful for medical school, but the schools are going to teach you what you need to know anyways so why bother.

If you are sincere about going to med school, your best bet is to find a major you can be passionate about and will enjoy. The statistics show that there is no advantage in admissions gained by being a certain type of major (the %ages fo majors entering medical school are nearly identicle to the %ages of majors applying to medical school). Do something you love and you'll enjoy your college years more.

Personally, my degree was in Sociology, the other med student on these boards was an Econ major, I have friends in my med school class who were: polisci, spanish, history, psych, art history, English, math, and business.
