Does anyone know anything about the chemistry program at Tech? I'm thinking about majoring in chemistry. I took AP Chem this year and have gotten solid A's each 9 weeks. Is AP chem good prep for general chemistry at tech?

This is Chemistry professor Ketan Trivedi:

I think that says all you need to know B)

Pretty much sums it up.

But seriously, chemistry is solid at VT. Look at chemical engineering too if you want a little bit more of a practical (as opposed to theoretical) program. I think ChemE is considerably smaller also, which is nice.

If you want a rigorous academic career, go ChemE. I’ve heard many times that ChemE is possibly the hardest college major out there because it combines math, physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering altogether into one major. If you really love Chemistry and want to do something major with your degree, ChemE would be a good choice. As for the Chemistry department itself, I hear really good things about it. For physics, I’ve seen some pretty low rankings for it besides for Tsu-Sheng Chang (Possibly, if not, the best VT teacher.) You could always e-mail Ketan Trivedi or Dr. Amateis. I’m sure they could give you some insight into the program.
