What a dream: To improve the lives of millions of the world's poor by creating bacteria that purify water.

It's Chetan Narain's dream.

"Something like that should be possible," says Chetan, 18, the top senior at Madison High School and this year's Star-Ledger Scholar for Morris County.

The young man conjured up the dream after working both at a genetics lab at Princeton University -- which he will enter as a freshman in the fall -- and with slum children in India for an organization called Pratham.

"I always was interested in science, but my time in India made me feel I should be involved in diplomacy or international business."

His interests don't stop there. He also heads his school's literary magazine and German club, plays tennis, and is active with the Boy Scouts.

Chetan achieved a perfect 2400 on the Scholastic Assessment Test, three top scores of 800 on SAT II subject matter tests in molecular biology, U.S. history and math, and grades of 5 on Advanced Placement tests in biology, U.S. history, calculus and chemistry.

Chetan is also one of 14 Indian-Americans to be a U.S. Presidential Scholar this year.

Congratulations, Chetan!
