What's with all the random threads lately?

i believe that there are many people who believe that, especially the adminstration at Chicago. That is why they are making such efforts to increase their ranking. And it is working. they jumped from 15 to 9. They have made many efforts to increase alumni funding, to give all the data they could to usnews. They are switching to the common app to get more applicants. For better or worse, I have a feeling that Chicago is only going up and that by next years's ranking, it will probably go higher. It will be tough to be in the top 5 because that means breaking into the league of HYMPS. But with the way things are going, it may just happen

interesting stuff is going on at Chicago, there are some realy significant moves being made to increase its ranking. I mean people really are strong believers of it needing to be in the very top schools and it is showing clearly these days. interesting times, interesting times...

Ya, I agree, but then again, part of the UChicago persona is disinterest in those stupid rankings anyway! The people who need to know Uchi is good do, so that's all that matters!

yeah, but part of me does think that it would be nice that if i were to say to people that i am thinking of transferring to uchicago from berkeley, they aren't like, "what, your going to another state school, i thought berkeley was the best public?"

name matters so much these days and I believe chicago deserves the name. although, currently even though it is world class institution, and quite possibly one of the best along with HYMPS, it does not get that level of prestige. it deserves it i believe, and yeah, we shouldn't care about rankings, but the fact is the world cares about rankings, and everyone wants to be successful, so why not do what you can do be more succesful AS LONG as you are not giving up the core values. so as soon as chicago becomes a generic school, no longer with the level of intellectual curiousity and brilliance that it currently has, thats when i would say the school has crossed the line

Actually, I like that it's not a well-known school because you deal with a lot less pretension. One of the things that I think would bother me a lot about the Ivies would be knowing that a lot of my classmates were attending in large part due to the name; at UChicago folks are mostly there for a real intellectual experience. However I'd be lying if I said the rankings really concerned me, or most people on campus for that matter.

While I don't think it should be ranked higher (all this does is lead to more applicants who don't really care about the school, especially with the Common App) it does deserve better name recognition. It's always surprising to me how many people HERE IN CHICAGO have never heard of the school and always get it mixed up with UIC or Loyola.

COULDNT AGREE WITH YOU MORE!!!

i think it's ranked high enough, but ppl still don't know how great it is, even with a big, fat 9 ranking
