chicago extended essay: personal or political?

For my Chicago extended essay, I wrote about one of my favourite failed political projects of all time, and talked about how this reflected the bridge between theory and practice (for the portals prompt). Friend says it’s too impersonal and I should start over completely. I can copy and paste the essay for reference, but I really think it’s a waste of a good prompt for me to BS about how much I love communities for another 700 words.

How do you think the extended essay should be approached?

This essay doesn’t necessarily have to be about you, it just has to have come from your brain. It is supposed to show how you think.

I have no idea if your essay does a good job conveying that, that’s really up to your judgement. But you shouldn’t scrap it just because the topic doesn’t involve you personally. Some of the best extended essays aren’t actually about their authors.

@HydeSnark Thanks! Here’s the first draft of the essay. I really don’t know if it’s good or not, my personal opinion of it is pretty neutral and my friends seem quite divided about it.

edit: posted essay, but deleted it since I’m afraid chicago will accuse me of plagiarism since they cant ensure the owner of this account is me. May post final version after Jan 1.

You can message it to me if you want some opinions.

I know it’s late, but the essay doesn’t have to be personal AT ALL.

I wrote political. To be precise, I wrote on how Rick Snyder failed the people of Flint.

If you write something that could have been written by another kid down the study hall, then the essay is no good. But if you write something that comes from your own unique perspective, then go for it. UC prompts are known for their quirkiness. UC loves people with strong intellectual skills - analytics, reflection, humor, creative etc… all these are important elements in your essay. I don’t think it matters of what you write, but how you write and analyze the subject matter. JMHO
