Do I have a chance at these schools?

UChicago

Northwestern

uMichigan

NYU

Rice

Harvey Mudd

URochester

Carnegie Mellon

Are there any other schools you suggest?

No offense, but no. Your EC’s suck honestly. Not much commitment, no leadership, no outside volunteering, etc. I’d consider racking up some officer positions, awards, volunteering, and perhaps summer programs.
But you seem to have the model ‘framework’.

Yeah, I know my ECs suck. I’m gonna try to get an officer position next year and do some volunteering this year. I’m already a junior so I think it’s a little late for awards though. Meh. Do you think my chance is medium, low, etc?

Have you won awards? It seems that someone involved in so many competitive clubs would have garnered a few state awards.

At this point, pretty low. Though you have a good ‘framework’, so good candidate for transfers later on anyway.

Try looking through others’ ‘chance me’s’ and seeing what EC’s, awards, activities they have and try modeling yourself following that. Unfortunetly you’ve missed a lot of deadlines for summer programs. But you can still try like JSA, and some university summer schools.

well previous summers I took a biology class and micro & macro econ at my community college
I got an award for best position paper of my committee for Model UN
I won first for regionals for FBLA but ninth in state so I don’t know if that’s of any use.
I should be volunteering at my library or hospital this summer

I don’t know if I can join any summer programs this summer though…

My recommendations should be pretty good.

Any other feedback?

I think that’s a little harsh, HonorLions. I know a decent few students from my school who have gotten into Rochester, CMU, or NYU with stats and activities equal to or (often) worse than yours. Some of the higher schools are probably reaches, but I think that you definitely have a decent shot at the schools I mentioned.

maybe dont talk about debate as much in your essays. play up something that youre stronger in!

Just to give the OP a sense of what they need to do. How would your opinions change if the poster had one or two leadership positions, one or two more state awards and a couple hundred hours of volunteering? Any chances at the upper universities?

well thanks for all the responses!

@ponderingturtle- yeah I would really like to know that actually. thanks for bringing that up.

@reesezpiecez103- that’s actually very encouraging to hear!

I’m just being a little more realistic here. Although a few good recs and a really kick ass essay can do the trick in what that guy said.

You should’ve mentioned all those things bro, cause that realllyyyy brings you up. Try shuffling through and find stuff old certificated from like grade 9+ and add that in.

for summer, just volunteer at the library or something related to FBLA/MUN (business, politics, government) and use that with ur awards for ur essay which can really help.

I’m glad that I could help you! I agree that college admissions are really competitive nowadays, but I don’t think it’s impossible. I would encourage you to look for more “leadership” opportunities, but I think you will be alright. I would also add Michigan to a school you could potentially be admitted to, although I’m only basing this off the fact that several students I know with stats similar to yours and fewer ECs were admitted from my school there this year.

Have you given any thought to schools like William and Mary, Lafayette, or Wake Forest? They might be slight reaches but I think you could be competitive there…again, this is judging solely on the students I know who have been admitted there.
