Chicago Unified - dance call conficts

So far, three of D’s schools are holding dance calls on February 4. Two at the same time (CCPA and Texas State). U Mich is also holding the dance call in the afternoon/evening (if D passes prescreen, she wants to do her audition on campus so not an issue). BOCO’s dance call also appears to be on February 4 (not on D’s list). When S auditioned 4 years ago, he did not have any dance call conflicts.

For more recent MT auditionees, how did you handle dance call conflicts? D is planning to call the schools to see if they are flexible with conflicts. Texas State wants students available 4:30 - 9:00; D’s CCPA dance call is 6:30.

As an aside, 2 years ago when we were checking in to the Palmer House the Sunday before auditions (D is an acting major so no dance calls), there was a young woman sitting on the floor in her dance clothes in FULL meltdown. Ugly crying. She felt she blew a dance call and she was totally shaken up and kept telling her mom they should just go home - the day BEFORE auditions started. Unified moms and dads - be prepared!!

Ugh. Maneuvering dance call schedules was our biggest challenge last year. We literally flew in from CA on Sunday, checked in at the Palmer House and then headed for the Roosevelt dance call down the street. She was exhausted - it was freezing - not a relaxing start at all. What I will say is that all the schools seemed to have a few dance calls available and were nice and flexible about rescheduling when conflicts arose. But just beware trying to pack too much in or too close together. We did on a couple of occasions and it was too much. If there is one main thing I would do differently knowing what I know now it’s not to try to fit so much in, take a few schools off the list and schedule more breaks and down time for rest and rejuvenation.

I think we are going to have to call since Sunday evening is the only time listed for both Texas State and CCPA. She already assumed she couldn’t do UMich at Unifieds. Good thing since she cannot be three places at once :-). We moved our arrival date up to Saturday to accommodate the Sunday dance calls but assumed they would be spread throughout the day (silly me!).

We scheduled BOCO for later in the week, and when doing so, it said that if you had a morning audition, you should do the afternoon dance call and if you had an afternoon audition, you should do the morning dance call. I read this to mean that they are doing 2 dance calls each day of auditions as it didn’t indicate a different date. It does lock up most of your day which makes scheduling even more fun than when a school takes a full morning, for example. Maybe I read it wrong - in which case, we should probably inquire.

Just checking in to see if anyone has reached out to Texas St or Michigan about the dance call conflict? Literally, they both have one dance call from 4:00 to 9:00 on Sunday. S has already committed to the Tx State call but really hope that doesn’t mean that we need to now figure out how to make a trip to Michigan. I have to think that there is going to be a significant overlap between the audition pool for those schools so hoping they will be willing to work with us. I’m going to call tomorrow so I’ll post an update once I get one.

D changed her CCPA call to 10 am and, if she gets through the prescreen for UMich, will do UMich on campus. Initially, she wanted to do UMich at Unifieds. If you get any movement from Tx State, would love to hear about it!

Texas State sent an email that they are splitting their dance call on Sunday 2/4 so that it doesn’t completely overlap with Michigan! I had already scheduled 2/2 in Ann Arbor but was able to move my S audition to Unifieds. That is such a relief because we were going to fly in and out of Chicago and then drive to Ann Arbor which added two days and a lot more stress to the process:) whew!
