Hey, please give me suggestions on which of the three schools I should go to. I'm greatly attracted by chicago for its intellectual stimulating atmosphere. BUt then I might want to do architecture since that's what I got accepted for, the 5 year professional degree. Berkeley is what my parents are voting for due to the instate tuition, in other words, a good deal.
Money is one big reason that's stopping me. Plus, architecture don't make that much money. Please help. Any advice would help. on schools, loans etc.

Architects don't make good money? I've never looked at that career, but that sounds suprising to me!

Nope, they don't. check on salary .com or something. For a profession that makes you work so hard, the reward is definitely not from money.

If architecture is your dream, then perhaps Cal is the best way to go. Architecture is typically a grad/professional school activity, but increasingly undergrad institutions are offering paths into the profession.

Chicago will not help much in the drafting techniques, but you will be able to argue your case drawing on interesting metaphors from Greek philosophers and playwrights. :)

if money's an issue, go to berkeley in-state. you'll get a great education at a greatly reduced price.

I agree that Cal might be the better choice. My twin sister and I both got accepted to Chicago but even with finAid we'll still end up paying 60K a year between the both of us. I'm probably going to Cal as well I'd rather not leave college in debt and broke

thanks everyone, you guys are giving great advices, rational and realistic ones too. but then there are so many people out there saying that I shouldn't be afraid on taking out loans, that you're going to live one life and choose the place that'll give you the best time.... ?
But then again, following your heart is risky, pressuring and isolating, simply b/c in modern day, your heart is always associated with money/parents.
I'm not sure if that made any sense.

please keep posting, many people are in this situation!

I'm in the same situation. I think I'll go to Cornell though, provided a reasonable finaid pack, not just because it's a ivy but cause i read too much bad stuff about berkeley. As to UChic, I just got in today so it hasn't hit me yet. I'll definitely think more about this

keep us posted! good luck on your choice.
Cornell has been one of my dream school for a long time... I went for a summer course there and had a blast. But then the financial thing never hit me until now that i actually got in.

My friend goes to Cornell Arch. school. Says he loves it.

Is UChicago's strength in the classics and ancient philosophy concentrated around Professor Martha Nussbaum? If so, that strength may be short-lived, for both her and her husband were offered tenured posts at Harvard Law School and Harvard University, respectively.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I do wonder about the origin's of UChicago's strength in the aforementioned fields.

(I know that though the Nussbaums were offered positions, it is another question as to whether they will take it. I would not put it above Martha, however, for she has taught at Harvard once before.)

Edit: Sorry if I sound overly critical; I applied as a transfer to UChicago and am concerned about their philosophy department, which seems to have its strengths grounded on a few key faculty members. Should they happen to leave, I do wonder how UChicago's program in philosophy will sustain itself. Charles Larmore already moved to Brown:(

I would definitely choose berkeley if I was an instate student. The quality and reputation of these colleges are comparable but berkeley would be so much cheaper. Ugh....Chicago asked me to take out $48,000 in loans. >_<

David, ****!!!!!!! You have no clue what you are talking about, and you never had to consider this yourself, Mr. NYU Stern Class of 2010

hey hey. that is still under consideration. pressuring me everyday to attend chicago isn't gonna help either lol

nspeds -

Are they accepting the position?

hey go to anyplace man but chicago man!!!im on the waitlist :)
....ok ok just kiddin!!!

You got it man. :p

I am not sure. I believe Martha is visiting at HLS either this semester or Spring 2007.

is it crowded in berkeley? like there's always a lot of people around everywhere?
