From Nick Zhao: Cal vs. Chicago, interesting points!

I am vaccinating between Cal and Chicago. So I did a research on which school is more prestige. However, after the research, I became more unsure of which is more prestige than the other. Here is what I found:

UChicago: Most Noble prize winners in the United States.
Best Economics Programs for undergraduate.
Average SAT, GPA is higher than most Ivy Leagues
Small!
Largest Library Research System.
The Princeton Review in 2004 rated the university as having the "Best Overall Educational Experience" for undergraduates among all American universities and colleges.
Bad: Expensive, but must be a school for rich people

Cal: Third best undergraduate Business School, Second Best Undergraduate Engineering School (better than Cornell and Carnegie Mellon, and even Caltech).
Ranks first nationally in the number of graduate programs
Best Public University.
Lowest In state tuition (unfortunately I am out state from Gig Harbor, Washington)
Largest Asian Population.
Only Graduate school that has ALL PHD ranked within top five of the nation.
Best Chemistry and English Graduate programs.
Very big!
Next to San Fransico, the city for the gays and lesbians.

Bad: Too many people, chances to be singled out is low. Worst faculty resource in the top schools.

Please take a vote so to help me decide where to go. Appreciate it!

Vote goes to Berkeley because I went there and I kick ass. Plus it's california versus the cold, crappy weather of Chicago.

Chicago. I got waitlisted at Chicago and it was my first choice. It doesn't really matter though because I love the thought of Berkeley now and its a better deal for me (I'm in-state). In your case though, Cal is not a big save compared to Chicago. Chicago offers more for your money since they're very big on making undergrads human beings rather than faceless students. If the price difference isn't much, you should definitely choose Chicago.

Your major could affect your decision though. What do you want to major in?

I signed for Sociology for Berkeley but University of Chicago for economics and Physics, however, I reallly do not care.

Bro, please do some more research because the styles are wholly different. UChicago is acclaimed for its extensive core curriculum and will, of course, offer more faculty involvement. It is not known for being a fun, party school.

BTW, the word you're looking for is "vacillate." ;)

go to chicago!!!!
the coursework is hard but you should meet really awesome people there

the biggest problem with uc's is trying to get the classes you want..its so crowded there, you'll have a hard time

besides, as a person who lives nearby berkeley...i don't like it...

If you're deciding by prestige, something's seriously wrong.

Nick, go to Chicago so you can take the swimming test.

Larger than Chicago I imagine, but largest? In total numbers? I though UCI would win this prize, or some other school (Arizona, Texas?)

Many non-gays and non-lesbians go to, live in, and enjoy San Francisco. I can't agree with your assesment of the entire city with that. And what do you mean by "worst faculty resource?" Office hours are offered, and many choose not to go. Is that the faculty's fault?

I agree with above posters who acknowledge how the schools are very different atmospheres. You should visit both of them. I imagine you'll find one calls to you much more.

I used to live in San Francisco and I can tell you one thing is for sure: that the stereotypical view of a whole bunch of lesbians and gays make up San Francisco is definitely not true. There are plenty, PLENTY, of people who are straight.

I agree with DRab, you should definitely visit both schools.

I think you shoudl go to Chicago because I don't want someone like you associated with my berkeley degree.

I mean ... Chicago is a better school.
