Chicago's Essay Topics: love them or hate them?

I'm assuming you're talking about the Starbucks on 55th and Kimbark....yeow. I think crime rates tend to be worse in the summer, because it seems like a lot of stuff has been going on that doesn't usually go on during the school year. Anyway, it's totally an area where you need to keep a good head on your shoulders, but even with that kids still go off by themselves in the middle of the night with their ipods and such.... and they've never had problems. Hmm.

I'm not pos. if this applies to Chicago (the city) as well, but at least where I live people can "smell fear." If you look scared, or even feel nervous around someone, they can tell as much as you can. So just keep in mind that nobody's out to hurt you, unless of course you do something to really **** 'em off. That would blow. So just be polite and wear sunglasses... for avoiding eye contact... which sound mean in writing geez but hey, it's the city.

Bad looks in Downtown Chicago? Which part?

Anyway, for topic 4, I was just wondering why the University picked some of the elements to include there. I know the essay is supposed to be eccentric, but they could've chosen other things equally eccentric, if you will, to include. so why the "paper airplane" and "the concept of geong"? Were they just being random?

I think so. semi-modeled after the way members of an audience will shout out things for improvvers to incorporate in a game. Either way, it's fun.

yep unalove thats the one i think. Its the one a few blocks from Max right?

The guy that walked in put it in his pocket before he got in, so he probably had it for protection.
I miss that place though. I had a great time there, but i just dont dig the city that much though. Faculty is amazing, and so is the academic environment. And cobb hall cafe. And the how classes have brilliant people. My japanese class had 4 grad students, 4 unergrad, 2 highschool.
When i was there, our RAs said some 10-15 kids get mugged each semester, but that pretty much all of them are alone at night.

I still would like to know more about the process of why they chose those particular elements.

correction to my previous post:
*jeong

Anyway, I really like #3 followed by 2 and finally, 1.
I don't like #4. Not my idea of creativity-- it's far too contrived. Overall, I like the topics this year better than last year's.

haha, i love the essays.

I'm not applying bc of the essay topics. How unnecessary.

I absolutely LOVE the essays... I'm having difficulty choosing because I kinda want to do them all. Hahaha..

I like them in the sense that they weed out those who really want to go there, and those who just want to get accepted to another top 10 school. I was going to apply there just to improve my chances of getting into a top school, but after seeing them; I'd rather spend my time improving essays for schools I really want to go to. Quite effective in that regard. It shows who really wants to go there and carters their education to that sort of person.

the only reason I want to apply to UChicago is because of their essay prompts. I want to write them, and to see if what I write is good enough to get me in...I honestly wouldn't be that phased if I didn't get in...I'm applying for fun.... :/

WAIT, we choose one of the 5?? or all 5??

DO NOT USE THIS ESSAY FOR THE COMMON APP. DARTMOUTH, BROWN, YALE, DUKE, PRINCETON, AND NORTHWESTERN WILL ALL THINK THAT YOU'RE ON LSD.

Haha loves it. I think I will miss this kind of thing when they switch to the Commonapp.

some of them are a little too crazy. Number 3? You have to be tripping on something to answer that one

Love them. It shows that they aren't just looking for someone who can write a genuine and intellectual essay, but someone who can be innovative, and actually think outside the box to get something accomplished. It shows who really has the capacity to go above and beyond the standard essay.

our opinions dont really matter, if students want to go the the university of chicago they will take the time to write the essays. Plus the essays show that you can write something creative, and possibly funny. they are interesting compared to the , "how i helped poor kids in insert-impoverished-country-here" or "how brilliant-teacher's-name-here inspired me" Chicago wants the kids with creativity and ingenuity, not the kids that work mindlessly at getting the best grade and doing whatever EC's will help them get into college

I've loved most of the essays in the past, but I wasn't a huge fan of this year's. I wish we had the prompts from 07-08 or 06-07.

I really do wish they required/allowed you to choose more than one, sigh.

In what started out as a response to #1 ended up so far from it that I diverged into a #5... seven pages, a colorful picture, and a short diologue later.

Lurve them ;)
