Child sick in dorm room..RA MIA!

Wow, I must be really old. It would never occur to me to expect an RA to take care of my sick child. When I got sick in college, back in the dark ages, I had my friends drive me down to the infirmary, where the nurse on duty gave me a bed for the night, then released me the next day with two bottles of pills. My mother never even knew about it until they got the whopper infirmary bill and she called to ask me why I wasn’t taking better care of myself.

Are RAs really supposed to function as parents? If so, it’s somewhat comforting as my kids (freshman and junior in HS) are probably a bit more sheltered than I was, but a part of me thinks college should be partly about learning to deal with things like this on your own.

I just learned most schools don’t have infirmaries any more. I consider this problematic for just the reason described in the original post. Kids can be sick enough to require monitoring, but not sick enough for a hospital. Not to mention being contagious.

That’s what infirmaries are for. Or were. Apparently they’re going the way of the do do bird.
