My D wants to develop high proficiency in Chinese during her undergrad years. She is considering Wellesley. What can you tell us about Chinese language study at Wellesley?

I haven’t taken Chinese at Wellesley myself, but I have a friend who’s majoring in it. She really likes the department. She says there’s a wide variety of classes and that studying abroad is encouraged.

If it’s financially possible for your family, I’d recommend having your daughter do an overnight visit. She can sit in on some classes and see how she feels. :)

I started Chinese at Wellesley. I took 101-102 my first year, 201-202 this past year, and this fall I’ll be studying abroad in Beijing.

The professors in the department are absolutely wonderful. Some of the professors I’ve had have gone beyond expectations – bringing in homemade dumplings for the entire class on the last day of classes, organizing a writing competition with an alumna, and overall just being incredibly kind and willing to be involved in our lives.

I definitely recommend the department! I went from knowing nothing at all to being able to hold conversations in Mandarin in just two years of study.

Let me know if she has any questions about the department.

I hope she can visit. She has applied for a travel grant since she goes to school in New Mexico. Congratulations on studying in Beijing! My D will be studying in Chengdu with NSLI-Y this summer.
