hi everyone. i was wondering if anyone has taken CHM 2045 and BSC 2010 [ chem 1 and bio 1 both with labs ] at the same exact time in the same semester at UF. i am trying to get a feel for how rough it would be to do since my track has me taking that first semester and then both CHM 2046 and BSC 2011 [ chem 2 and bio 2 both with their labs] next semester.

I took chem 2 and bio 1 at the same time, and physics 1, orgo 1, and bio 2 at the same time. It can be time consuming, esp the labs, but you are going to have to go through some more difficult semesters compared to others. I assume you are 2 year pharm? I know many take chem 1 and bio 1 at the same time. Some were about to do it, but for others it was too much. I guess it depends on how comfortable you are. I took ap chem and bio, so I had some background knowledge and knew what I could handle.

That is true. I was concerned about that too, but the Pre-pharm advisor said the same thing about not taking them together the first semester. I think because D is taking Calculus too that semester, that would be quite challenging for the first semester.

I’m an incoming freshman too so I can’t comment on the difficulty, but just warning you that probably everyone at preview is going to tell you not to do it. They can’t force you not to if you’re dead set on it, but be ready to defend your case.

In the spring I took CHM 2046 and BSC 2010. If you took AP/IB Chem or Bio in HS and did relatively well, CHM 2045 and BSC 2010 really shouldn’t be too difficult for you. If you didn’t take either, you will probably have some trouble.

okay, so if i am doing the two year pharmacy track, then how would i go about completing the bio and chem 1 before semester two where it states one must complete bio 2 and chem 2. it seems like if you didn’t take them at the same time you would just get behind on the track because semester 3 is organic 1 and semester 4 is organic 2.

is there a way to complete it or would you have to do it next summer in 2010?
i’m just trying to figure things out since i go to preview next week.

If you do decide to hold off, then you would probably doing summer C to keep on track for the 2 year track. If no summer, then probably do the 3 year track.

another question of mine : do you have to be on the pre-pharmacy two year track to be considered going for pharmacy? or can you major in something in like biology and then just go and apply for pharmacy school when the time comes? which is the best option?

I’m pretty sure it like pre-med, were you just have to take the required courses. However, med schools require that you graduate with a bachelors, while pharmacy schools don’t care.

okay, then once you complete the 2 year pharm. track, what do you to the next two years until you get a Bachelor’s degree? do you have to apply for the school after the 2 year degree or after the 4 year degree?

I dont know the time line for pharmacy admissions. But you do 2 years of pre-req. Some time in those 2 years you take the PCAT and apply to pharm school. Then you start pharm school fall of 3rd year. Some people do 3 years, since its less stress. I personally only know 3 people that did 2 years. 2 went on to UF pharm and 1 went to Howard.

so it is not uncommon to see students complete the 2 year pharm track in 3 years? i don’t want to put too much stress on myself the first semester since it will be an adjustment period, similar to what the advisors would advise.

I always though there were 3 tracks: 2 year, 3 year, or just do 4 years and get a bachelors (<–that can sometimes be done in 3 depending on the major).

Back to the original post, I have a similar dilemma.

I took AP Biology in HS and plan to take Intro to Chem CHM1025 over the summer.

Do you think taking CHM2045 and BSC2010 will be too difficult for me? My background in Biology is strong and i will have a good background in Chemistry after the summer term.
