its not ok to get help on any part of the application.. all the schools honor codes require everything to be your own work so why cheat to get in.

I'm not saying I received help. I was asking if they would allow it, and now I realized they couldn't. I have a very high value system, if you're asking, and I've never cheated.

I know that many kids applying to colleges and boarding schools do get help from their English teachers, though, which is why I've been misled. Thank you for clearing that up.

Many children get a lot of help (or their parents write their essays for them), but that shouldn't be done. I personally don't think it's the end of the world or "cheating" (which is really more of an idea than an actual thing, because different people define cheating in such different terms . . .) if a parent or friend runs through it to check the grammar. If you're normally good at that, it might be best not to even consider it, just so you don't have to worry about it. Of course, if a school specifically says you shouldn't, don't.

any outside assistance means that the essay isn't your own entirely.

Definitely true. It's a very fine line. I was very strict about the instructions; not everyone is.

that's not true.

my school offered an editing workshop twice to help with essays.
You write your essay. It is your essay. THey are just checking it.

Please choose one essay from the following options and address the question in the space provided. Your answer should reflect your own thoughts, ideas, and writing skills. Your parents, teachers, friends, etc. should NOT edit your answer.

"not" was in bold italics..

wow.. i think that's very unethical.

I didn't have anyone edit my St. Paul's essay, specifically because they wrote that. However, I do see how people could interpret it differently; you have to define "edit". Some people don't consider looking over it and making minor suggestions editing. And of course, all the schools expect many of the essays to be extremely edited, no matter what they put on there, so some people consider that justification. Please not that I'm not disagreeing with you, blairt, just pointing out another way of looking at it. :)

i was referring to clz's school workshop!
