Choate Housing Debacle

Can anyone shed first-hand light on the Fourth Form Girls Housing Debacle at Choate? Apparently because they over-enrolled 3 Freshman girls for the next academic year, they had to switch their oldest girls' freshman dorm with the more popular Sophomore dorm to accomodate them, so 9 Sophomore girls were made to take the least desirable dorm on campus.

Additionally, the girls' lottery was not the same as the boyz lottery. Boys got numbers 1,2, 3 etc and it was very transparent, where as the girls were told to pick a number off the periodic table, then thru some mystery formula were ranked. The girls who were stuck were told they had bad numbers, but never actually got a number outside the "element" they chose. Could a case of discrimination be made?

Finally, I would think the school could allow those who were unhappy to switch rooms with kids yet unassigned who are coming into the 10th grade class but apparently, not so. This is all only rumor. Couldn't possibly be true,

Any truth to this mishandling?

Okay-- First off the sophomore dorm that was switched into a freshman dorm is not the most popular dorm to live in sophomore year at all. Most people want to live in the new dorms sophomore year and only those who want to live in an ‘exclusive environment’ live in the dorm to which you are referring. It only houses around 11 girls so there is not a wide range of people. The girls that were placed in the originally freshman dorm chose to live there. Some put it as their first choice showing that they were not ‘made’ to live there. Second, the dorm that will now hold the sophomores is an awesome dorm and those that live there love it. Yes, location wise it is not fantastic, but that’s life. Sophomores just didn’t want to live there because it is far away from the other sophomore dorms. The freshman will like Pitman (now freshman) and are not missing much by having Squire (now sophomore) changed.

In regards to the elements, I was not here as a freshman but students requests are honored more or less. There will always be arrangements made outside of the lottery just to avoid conflict. **when I say this I mean that if the deans see that two girls who have been placed in the same dorm are constantly at odds with each other, they may take it upon themselves to switch one of them to avoid any issues in the dorm. That happens for every grade, not just the rising 3rd formers. I can assure you that especially at Choate, there is not discrimination between who gets what dorm depending on if the teachers like you or not. People may say that, but in reality, they are just sore that they did not get their first choice dorm.

As for the incoming sophomore rooms, there are specific rooms blocked off for incoming sophomores. These rooms are placed and blocked off from returners to insure that the new students are put into a good mix of new students and returners. If this was not the case, returning students would put all of their friends in their hall and exclude new sophomores from living there. Therefor, there are specific rooms for new students so that they are able to meet their peers.

The lottery is tricky. It upsets many people who didn’t get their first, second or even third choice dorm. But for those who get the dorm they want, there is usually not much complaining. What it comes down to it making the best of which ever dorm you are put into. No dorm has bad advisors or unfriendly people. At the end of the day, it is really only the place where you sleep.

Hope this helped.

I don’t think Squire Stanley is “exclusive.” There are girls who were placed there for next year who want out, not in.

The lottery for the girls and the boys needs to be the same and transparent to all. That’s the discrimination I am referring to.

There are people placed into every dorm that want out, even in the best dorms. There are also people that put it as their first choice. Some people wanted Squire and didn’t get it, others did.

That is how the lottery system has been for rising freshman for a while and though it makes a few unhappy, everything works out come fall.
